John of Lancaster (1389 – 1435) was the son of Henry IV of England and regent in France to his nephew Henry VI. He was also the first duke of Bedford.

A member of the Templar Order, he had Jeanne d'Arc tried and executed in 1431 during the Hundred Years' War.

Biography[]

On 22 March 1429, the Duke of Bedford was mentioned by Jeanne d'Arc in a letter dictation condemning him, the boy-King Henry VI, the Count of Suffolk William de la Pole, John, Lord Talbot, and Thomas, Lord Scales, demanding their immediate surrender to "the Maid who is sent here from God".[1]

Before the Dauphin of France, Charles was crowned king, the Duke of Bedford, together with Philip, Duke of Burgundy and Charles chamberlain Georges de la Trémoille, plotted how to control the weak-willed future king.[2]
