The Jesuits, officially the Society of Jesus, are a Catholic order of clerics founded in 1540. The Jesuits mainly work in evangelization, education, and cultural pursuits.[1]
History[]
During the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century, a number of Jesuit priests were expelled from the British Empire.[2] The Jesuits, however, managed to continue their mission of evangelization, expanding into Asia, primarily into China, Japan, and India. The Italian Jesuit missionary and Templar Alessandro Valignano was sent to Japan to aid Francisco Cabral in introducing Catholicism to the country, but he would use his Jesuit connections to scour Japan for Templar recruits. When Cabral confronted Valignano about this, he used his influence to force Cabral to resign from his post as Superior of the Jesuit Mission.[3]
In the early 18th century, the Jesuits, along with secular priests and Ursulines nuns, worked together to help build the then-new French colony of Quebec.[4] In the same period, the Canary Islands were a popular location for European Jesuits and missionaries due to their churches.[5] On the African colony of Ziguinchor, the Jesuits, nuns, and missionaries living in the city sought resources to improve their settlements and commissioned some items from sailors. The Welsh pirate Edward Kenway traded cocoa pods with them for a good payout.[6]
