Jean-Claude Golvin (born 1942) is a French archaeologist and architect. He specializes in the artistic reconstruction of ancient cities and monuments.

Biography[]

Born on 18 December 1942 in Sfax, Tunisia as the son of art historian Lucien Golvin, Jean later studied in Algiers.[1]

In 1995, Jean illustrated L'Expédition d'Egypte, 1798-1801, included within was a detailed overview,[2] and normal overview of Alexandria.[3][4] Also included was an illustration of the Canopic road of Alexandria,[5] a recreation of the Roman era Alexandrine Lageion and Serapeum, [6] a view from the Mediterranean Sea of the port,[7] its Canopic Way,[8] and lighthouse.[9]

In 1997, Jean illustrated L'Egypte restituée, tome 3. Sites, temples et pyramides de Moyenne et de Basse Egypte, included within was; a recreation of the city of Memphis,[10], a mastaba in Giza,[11] the pyramids of Giza,[12][13] and Temple Sphinx.[14][15]

In 2012, Jean illustrated Il était une fois... les Romains en Languedoc, included within was an illustration of the Lageion Hippodrome.[16]

Today, he has created more than 800 drawings, which include three volumes focusing on the reconstitution of ancient Egypt. His exquisitely detailed work can be found in books and museums around the world.[17]

Behind the scenes[]

Jean-Claude Golvin collaborated with the team behind Assassin's Creed: Origins for their Discovery Tour educational game-mode. He created 19 exclusive watercolors for the development team to use as basis for creating the cities.[18] He later collaborated with Ubisoft again during the development of Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, with his first drawing of a top-down layout for the ancient Viking town of Kaupang serving the developers as a guideline on towns from that time period.[19]
