Jarjaraya was a town in medieval Iraq, located by the Tigris river southeast of Baghdad. During the 9th century, the town was home to many Zanj slaves freed by the rebels led by Ali ibn Muhammad. In addition to the Zanj slaves, the town was home to a number of merchants who came to Baghdad for business but struggled to make ends meet.

History[]

In the 860s, in response to the brewing Zanj rebellion led by Ali ibn Muhammad, the Order of the Ancients used their connections in the Abbasid Caliphate's Turkic Army to organize the capture and execution of countless Zanj slaves and rebels in Jarjaraya. The operation was overseen by a captain named Dogan bin Arslan and had the goal of luring out Ali, as the Order believed that with his death, the rebellion would come to an end.[1]

When Ali informed his allies, the Alamut Hidden Ones, of his plight, they agreed to assist him and the Hidden One Basim Ibn Ishaq was sent to accompany Ali to Jarjaraya. There, the two sought to find the culprit behind the executions, though Basim found it difficult to gather information from the civilians as anyone caught conspiring with the rebels risked meeting the same fate.[1]

Eventually, through a combination of Basim's information-gathering skills and Ali's more extreme methods, the two learned about Dogan's farm outside the town, where the captured rebels were taken and killed. After freeing the rebels held at the farm, Basim joined them and Ali in an attack on Dogan's villa, during which the captain was killed, bringing an end to the executions.[1]
