James Blanchard was a serial counterfeit coiner active during the late 17th century, especially during the Great Recoinage of 1696.[1]
Biography[]
In 1696, Blanchard worked at a water mill in Surrey. One day, Isaac Newton and Omar Khaled arrived to investigate the counterfeiting, before Blanchard ambushed them. Khaled and Blanchard battled, causing the floor to collapse and drop them onto the river below. After unsuccessfully attempting to drown each other, Khaled overpowered Blanchard before Newton intervened. Blanchard was arrested and the fake money within the mill was gathered to be taken to the Tower of London.[1]
