Isshiki Mansaku (died 1582), also known as The Soiled Merchant, was a Japanese daikan who presided over the village of Ōtsu in Ōmi.
Biography[]
In his early life, Isshiki Mansaku mainly worked in taking care of the village's waste management. Feeling inferior, he gradually rose through the ranks and became Ōtsu's daikan. During his rule, Mansaku abused his power by stealing more than the necessary earnings from his people. With his newfound money and power, he lived in a lush home and became a recluse. He, along with other daikans, later allied with the Shinbakufu to financially aid their endeavours in exchange for protection.[1]
In 1582, Kuma, a bodyguard to Lady Oichi, met with the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke to discuss about eliminating the group of corrupt daikans. They accepted and started to track down the corrupt officials. Traveling to the Otsu Lower District, they heard the locals in anguish over Mansaku's rules and rumors of the daikan demanding the tax in human waste. Breaking into his estate, they assassinated Mansaku, ending his influence.[1]
Personality and traits[]
Isshiki Mansaku wielded a katana as his main weapon.[2]
