Ismene was a helot who worked under the poet Praxilla during the Peloponnesian War.

Biography[]

At one point during her journey as a travelling poet, Praxilla met Ismene and took her in as her servant. Ismene would regularly accompany Praxilla throughout her journey, including to the yearly-held poet festival in the Port of Kreusis.[1] During one particular festival, Ismene met a poet named Orchimedes, who was the biological son of Praxilla whom she had abandoned when he was young. Orchimedes sought revenge and plotted with Ismene to steal her precious lyre, so he could sell it for drachmae and buy Ismene's freedom.[2] While the misthios Kassandra kept Praxilla and Alkibiades occupied, Ismene and Orchimedes sneaked into Praxilla's tent and stole the lyre.[3]

While they initially planned to sell the lyre, Orchidedes wanted to bring the lyre to a group of bandits known as the Vipers, which inadvertently led to his capture. Ismene called for help, which was heard by Kassandra. As the misthios had been sent by Kassandra to retrieve the lyre, Ismene had no choice but to reveal her's and Orchimedes' plot, requesting for Kassandra's aid in freeing him from the bandit hideout at the Temple of Athena Itonia.[2]

Trivia[]

  • The name Ismene is possibly derived from the Greek word isme (ισμη), meaning 'knowledge'.
