Ido Yoshihiro (井戶 良弘, died 1581), also known as the Onryo Samurai, was a Japanese samurai who served under Oda Nobunaga during the late 16th century. He was a member of the Shinbakufu and the father of Junjiro, a young monk training under Sorin.
Biography[]
Siege of Iga and death[]
On 30 September 1581, while using Nobunaga's invasion of Iga as cover, Yoshihiro was sent by the Shinbakufu to recover the box[1] containing the Imperial Regalia Yasakani no Magatama,[2] which had been hidden by Fujibayashi Nagato in the Mihata Kofun. Inside the tomb, Yoshihiro found Nagato's daughter Naoe, who had been sent by her father to recover the artifact. Yoshihiro easily overpowered her for possession of the box and used his kanabō to hit Naoe in the face and knock her out.[1]
Alerted by his guard about the approaching Nagato, Yoshihiro quickly fled the area,[1] retreating to Katano Castle in Izumi Settsu. There, he awaited the arrival of the other Shinbakufu while safeguarding the box. However, shortly before the Shinbakufu's arrival, Naoe, having recovered from her injuries, infiltrated the castle and assassinated Yoshihiro with her Hidden Blade to retrieve the box.[3]
Legacy[]
- "I still miss him. My father. When we first found him, I didn't believe it. But then, when I realized it was you... It turned real. Sorin wanted me to be kind to you. He said we should show you mercy – even when I didn't want to. I thought you were a demon. A monster. But Sorin taught me. Showed me other ways to let the hate out. And slowly... you started looking like something else. A person. A friend. Family."
- ―Junjiro to Naoe, 1582.[src]-[m]
Not long after Yoshihiro's death, his body was discovered by his young son Junjiro and the latter's mentor Sorin. Finding an unconscious Naoe and her deceased father Nagato nearby, the pair deduced that the former had killed Yoshihiro, but Sorin nonetheless decided to take the young kunoichi in and treat her injuries. During Naoe's recovery, Junjiro almost killed her in revenge, but with Sorin's encouragement, he slowly learned to forgive the kunoichi for assassinating his father and came to see her as his new family.[4]
Behind the scenes[]
Historically, there was a samurai named Ido Yoshihiro who took part in the conquest of Iga in 1581. However, the historical Yoshihiro died three decades later, in 1612.[5]
