During the Peloponnesian War, the Adrestia, commanded by the Spartan misthios Kassandra and captained by Barnabas, engaged the Iapetos and his companions in battle, and sank it. Kassandra claimed the sail and finery of Iapetos for her own.
- The ship is named after the Titan Iapetos, regarded by Homer in his Iliad as the brother of Kronos.
- The ship's finery bears a stylized map of the fabled labyrinth of the Minotaur. This is a visual also seen as the emblem of Messara.
