Hyenas are a species of feliform mammals endemic throughout Africa, western Asia, and India.

History[]

The Krokottas Hyena

Hyenas were not native to Greece, but despite this, one of them had made their den within Skandeia Bay on Kythera Island. At the request of Daphnae, the acting leader of the Daughters of Artemis,[1] the Spartan misthios Kassandra hunted down the Krokottas Hyena and slew it, bringing its pelt to Daphnae as proof of her kill.[2]

1st century BCE[]

In the 1st century BCE, hyenas predominantly haunted the areas near deserts, and hunted in packs. Their ears were in demand in Egyptian markets, selling for 15 drachmae per pair. In addition, Khaliset, a member of the Order of the Ancients who used the Hyena as her cryptonym, used hyenas to do her bidding.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

The hyenas that appear in Assassin's Creed: Origins are spotted hyenas. However the alphas appear to be striped hyenas. Conversely to how they are portrayed in-game, spotted hyenas are on average the larger of the two species and are not normally found in Egypt.

The model used for the Krokottas Hyena in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey is a larger version of the alpha hyenas from the previous game.
