Hreiðmarr, anglicized as Hreidmar, was an Isu and a king of Svartálfaheimr.

Mythology

Attested to in both the Völsunga saga and the Prose Edda, Hreiðmarr was a dwarf sorcerer and the father of Regin, Fafnir, Ótr, Lyngheiðr, and Lofnheiðr. After Loki accidentally killed Ótr, the Æsir paid Hreiðmarr a weregild with many valuables, among which was the magical ring Andvaranaut, which had the ability to help its wearer find gold anywhere. However, the ring was also cursed to bring misfortune to all who owned it, and in time, Regin and Fafnir killed their father for possession of the ring.

Biography

During his reign, Hreiðmarr lived within his personal palace. According to local legend, he commissioned the creation of four statues depicting the World Holders once the building's foundations were set and he was pleased that his vision was coming to fruition. Hreiðmarr owned a set of armor many deemed to be cursed, as it slowly stripped its user's life energy. He was only able to use the armor without ill effect after placing a "Mótsognir's Clarity" rune on each piece to combat the adversity.

Legacy

By the time the Muspels had invaded, Hreiðmarr had died long ago. The denizens of Grenhellir Shelter often proclaimed that they would not have to live cowering in a mountain if Hreiðmarr was still alive. Odin later retrieved Hreiðmarr's legendary armor and immediately suffered from the curse until he, too, found and placed the runes on each piece.
