Hogne Sea-Tossed (died 880s) was a Norse drengr who served under Thorgest alongside his army, during Thorgest's reign as the earliest King of Dublin.
Biography[]
As one of Thorgest's soldiers, Hogne served under his king until he was tossed from his ship and thought dead as he drifted in the sea. As time passed and after Thorgest died, Hogne stayed at the sea stack of Downpatrick Head and lived there, yearning for a death fit for Valhalla.[1]
Hogne was left alone, cursing the sea god Njörðr for letting him live and burying competitors who failed to defeat him in combat. Hogne was discovered by the Viking jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir as he was tending to his land. Hogne spoke to Eivor as he stated his current situation and asked her to send him off to Valhalla. Hogne received Eivor's confirmation and both battled for an honorable death. Hogne wielded both a sickle sword and a dagger, but Eivor proved victorious. Hogne thanked Eivor for her part in his honorable death. After Hogne succumbed to his wounds, Eivor sent him to Valhalla and retrieved the Dublin Champion Breeches from his personal effects.[1]
Trivia[]
- Depending on who Eivor battled first, Hogne may reveal Thorgest's resting place or the existence of his fellow warrior, Blud the Giant.
