Hilla was the wife of the Swedish farmer Östen Jorundsson and the mother of Tørgils, Agnes, and Greta.
Biography[]
Departure of Östen[]
One day in 975, Östen was summoned by King Eric the Victorious to fight against Styrbjörn the Strong, and as he announced as such to their children, she went and angrily resumed her weaving in the loom on the corner. Her anger was in part because she knew a part of him wanted to go for his own honor. Östen asked his son to deliver the summons to the next farm as well and asked Agnes to take Greta outside and find Arne, mostly so he could talk to their mother.[1]
Now alone, Östen requested a piece of thread from her, which she provided, skeptical. He had her tie it around his wrist, saying that he would carry the thread of his life into battle and only she could cut it once he returned home. He explained who the enemy was and her anger dissipated, seeing the need for the battle. She comforted him about the farm, saying that she had Tørgils and Arne and everything would be well until his return. Later, Hilla helped Östen prepare his food stores for the voyage. After Tørgils had gone to sleep, the couple nestled by the fire until it was time to sleep. They said goodbye the next morning.[1]
Östen's return[]
Months later, when her husband returned from battle, Hilla and the rest of her family rushed to greet him. After gathering his wife up in his arms and kissing her, he embraced his three children.[2]
Personality and traits[]
She had dark hair, usually kept in a careless braid, which her husband found charming.[1]
