The Heptarchy was the group of several Anglo-Saxon kingdoms that controlled the land that is now England. The collapse of the Heptarchy began in 829 when Wessex annexed Essex, Kent, and Sussex. The kingdoms of East Anglia, Mercia, and Northumbria all successively fell to Wessex in the century following the Vikings' invasion with the Great Heathen Army, marking the creation of a unified England.
