Henry VI (1421 – 1471) was the King of England and Lord of Ireland from 1422 to 1461 and again from 1470 to 1471, and disputed King of France from 1422 to 1453.

Biography[]

Inheriting two thrones[]

In August 1422, the infant Henry VI was made King of England, succeeding his father Henry V. Later in October, he became King of France, succeeding his maternal grandfather, Charles VI.[1] His claim to the French throne was heavily disputed however and only escalated the Hundred Years' War further. The Treaty of Troyes, signed by his father and Queen Isabeau of France, made it so that instead of the French throne going to its next in line, Charles VII, it would go to the next English king.[2]

Condemnation by Jeanne d'Arc[]

In January 1429, Jeanne d'Arc mentioned the boy-king in regards to her disdain that Queen Isabeau handed France over to him. She made these opinions known to Jean de Metz while she and her step-cousin Gabriel Laxart were in Vaucouleurs to see his lord, Robert de Baudricourt.[2] On 22 March, the King was mentioned by Jeanne d'Arc in a letter dictation condemning him, Duke of Bedford John of Lancaster, the Count of Suffolk William de la Pole, John, Lord Talbot, and Thomas, Lord Scales, demanding their immediate surrender to "the Maid who is sent here from God".[3]
