Henan (河南, 'South of the River') is a territory in north central China. It is the historical heartland of the Chinese civilization, from which its earliest states emerged.[1] Many of China's most important cities have been located here, among them Luoyang, which served as the capital of the Han dynasty in its latter period[2] and eastern capital during the Tang,[3][4] and Kaifeng, which was capital of the Song dynasty.[5] Under the Tang, Henan was organized as a circuit[6] while in the present-day, it is a province of the People's Republic of China.[7]
