Heiji was a Japanese blacksmith who lived in the region of Izumi Settsu during the 16th century, and a member of the Kakushiba ikki.
Biography[]
Heiji was a second-generation resident of Sakai, whose parents made the best tobacco knives in the city.[1] When the daimyō Oda Nobunaga came to Sakai, he asked Heiji's parents to craft weapons for his soldiers. After they refused, they were taken away and executed, with their heads displayed to serve as an example to others. Heiji was able to escape with the help of Tomiko, who risked her life to hide him with her family.[2] Following his parents' death, Heiji stopped the tobacco knife business and had them melted down.[1]
In 1582, a group of thugs came to harass Heiji and demanded that he make knives for their group. The kunoichi Fujibayashi Naoe, who had been sent by Tomiko to recruit Heiji, came upon the sight of the thugs harassing the blacksmith and eliminated them. Knowing he owed Tomiko a favor, Heiji promptly accepted to leave with Naoe, seeing as he had nothing left in Sakai.[1]
After moving to Tomiko's homestead, which served as a hideout for Naoe's league, a forge was built for Heiji,[1] where he offered weapon upgrading services for Naoe, and subsequently the samurai Yasuke.[3]
