Heart of Stone was a virtual representation of one of Kassandra's genetic memories, relived by Layla Hassan in 2018 through the Portable Animus HR-8.5.
Description[]
Kassandra met a young woman who sought her help to stand out and gain favour with a wealthy man.
Dialogue[]
Kassandra travelled to the Psaros Pyrgos on the island of Seriphos, where she spotted a large crowd of young women gathered.
- Civilian 1: Please, Eros! Let it be me. Let him pick me!
- Civilian 2: I got here first, back off! The scion will pick me!
Kassandra stepped into the crowd to take a look. A young man emerged from the cave to greet the women.
- Aetios: I'll see you all at the selection ceremony, ladies! I especially hope—
He eyed the woman with long hair in front.
- Aetios: You show up.
The man went inside the cave as the woman held her hand to her chest, while another woman eyed her suspiciously.
- Kassandra: Let me guess, he's rich.
A woman approached Kassandra.
- Kallikleia: That's Aetios! The scion of the most influential family in Keos. And his wife-choosing ceremony is tomorrow! We need Eros' blessings to be picked.
- Kassandra: You hope to marry into riches.
- Kallikleia: No! My feelings are for Aetios, not his wealth.
- Kassandra: Even if your feelings for him are real. They get stronger with drachmae.
- Kallikleia: No! I really am in love with him!
The other woman joined in their conversation.
- Hekate Witch: Anything?
- Kallikleia: Yes, anything!
The woman laughed.
- Hekate Witch: Eros? Please, his ears are stuffed full with the prattling of these women. Let me help, I'm a witch of Hekate, goddess of witchcraft and magic. I know just the thing. A love potion.
- Kassandra: Ridiculous. Love potions are a myth—
Kassandra groaned.
(Accept – "I'll help you.")
- Kassandra: Fine. I'll get the ingredients for your love potion.
(If players asked "How will I find the 'finest wine'?")
- Kassandra: "The finest wine" isn't much to go on. How will I get it?
- Hekate Witch: A shipment of expensive wine was lost in a shipwreck recently. Look around the wreckage in Pirate Bay, and you'll find a cask or two, if it hasn't already been pillaged by pirates. It's beached on the west coast of the island.
(If players asked "Where are these wild mushrooms, exactly?")
- Kassandra: Where will I find wild mushrooms?
- Hekate Witch: No, no! A new shipment of very special mushrooms has arrived at the Customs Warehouse. Fetch me some of those.
(Leave – "That's enough.")
- Kassandra: That's all. I'll see to the items.
- Hekate Witch: Excellent. Meet us at the temple on the hilltop when you're done.
Kassandra took her leave, and Ikaros scouted the entrances to the two locations she needed to visit.
- Kassandra: That's the shipwreck with the wine. Hope the pirates haven't gotten here yet.
- Kassandra: That's the warehouse. The wild mushrooms will be in there somewhere.
Kassandra travelled across the Chora to where the warehouse was located.
- Kassandra: The Customs Warehouse. Better get looking for those mushrooms.
She infiltrated the warehouse and overheard a conversation between the guards.
- Greek Soldier 1: Have you heard of that pirate woman, Xenia?
- Greek Soldier 2: Malaka. She's bad news.
- Greek Soldier 1: I know, that's why I'm bringing it up! What if she, I don't know, has plans for these mushrooms that just came in?
- Greek Soldier 2: What does a pirate need with mushrooms?!
- Greek Soldier 1: I heard they can be made into weapons! Or a poison, I can't remember.
- Greek Soldier 2: Just shut up.
Kassandra sneaked through the warehouse and recovered the mushrooms stored in the corner of the second floor.
- Kassandra: These should do fine. Though... they don't look safe to eat.
(Shipwreck visited first)
- Kassandra: Wine and wild mushrooms. That's all of it. I should go to the girl and the witch at the temple.
Kassandra made her way up the west coast towards the shipwreck.
- Kassandra: That must be the shipwreck she was talking about.
As she drew closer, she overheard a conversation.
- Soldier: This is strong stuff.
- Brute: Save that wine for Xenia!
- Soldier: I'm just pinching a little bit, she'll never know.
Kassandra dispatched the pirates and recovered what was left of the wine reserves in the shelter
- Kassandra: This is all the wine left. The looters stripped the shipwreck clean.
(Warehouse visited first)
- Kassandra: Wine and wild mushrooms. That's all of it. I should go to the girl and the witch at the temple.
With both ingredients in hand, Kassandra made her way to the temple.
- Hekate Witch: Look who has returned.
- Kallikleia: Misthios! We're over here!
Kassandra approached them.
- Kassandra: Here's everything you asked for.
She handed over the items.
- Kallikleia: Thank you, misthios!
- Hekate Witch: Now, I just need a more... personal artifact, the last ingredient.
- Kassandra: I've come this far, I'll see it through. What else do you need, witch?
The following night, Kassandra travelled to Aetios' estate. There, she found a nearly bald Kallikleia on the verge of tears.
- Kassandra: What—
- Kallikleia: Misthios! Kill this snake! She did this to me! She made me bald!
She pointed out the witch talking to Aetios. The witch overheard them.
- Hekate Witch: I'm sorry, my love. Give me a moment, some peasants need my attention.
The witch approached them to gloat.
- Kassandra: You said "a little bit" of her hair. Explain this.
- Hekate Witch: Explain? It's clear. Beautiful, gullible, idiot girl falls prey to—
She paused for dramatic effect.
- Hekate Witch: Her competition.
- Kallikleia: She set me up! Aetios picked her instead. H-he didn't even take a second look at me...
(If players asked "Why would you do this?")
- Kassandra: Why would you do such a thing?
- Hekate Witch: Aetios can be no one's but mine. I'm the one who truly loves him. I grew up with him. I've always been the one looking out for him! You think I'd let some starry-eyed fledgling after his wealth steal the love of my life from me?
She spat derisively.
- Hekate Witch: Aetios... doesn't know what's good for him. He's been eyeing this one for a while now. He liked the way she looked. So, I changed that.
The witch laughed proudly.
(If players asked "What about the love potion?")
- Kassandra: What happened to the potion?
- Hekate Witch: Why, she drank it! And look! It worked wonderfully.
- Kallikleia: She added a lock of my hair to the potion and then made me drink it. I didn't feel anything strange at the time, but when I did... All my hair... it just began to fall off.
- Kassandra: What trickery is this?! You used her hair in a spell—
- Hekate Witch: A spell? Are you idiots? If only something so convenient existed. It's simple alchemy. With a little knowledge of poisonous local flora, anything is possible. And wild mushrooms are known to cause violent reactions, but honestly—I've never seen anyone go bald! Just a horrible rash, at best. This went better than I expected!
The witch cackled with glee.
(If players chose "Just give me my drachmae.")
- Kassandra: I was promised drachmae. Just give it to me. I didn't up for any of this drama.
- Hekate Witch: Technically the girl asked you for the items, not me.
- Kallikleia: She's making fools of us both! Kill her, misthios!
- Kassandra: You're crazy, you'll pay for this.
- Hekate Witch: She played the game and she lost. There's nothing to pay for. You believe she's innocent in all this? She tried to get ahead with magic. So, spare me the hypocrisy. Just leave and take your bald friend with you.
- Kallikleia: Please, misthios... do something.
- Kassandra: I'll cut through every last one of your guards to get to you.
- Hekate Witch: Guards! Stop this misthios!
Kassandra killed the witch and the guards.
- Aetios: What have you done to my wife?! You'll pay for this, misthios!
The witch was taken aback by Kassandra's cunning.
- Hekate Witch: What are you doing?
Kallikleia joined in.
- Kallikleia: The misthios speaks the truth! Look what she did to me. She poisoned me and made me hideous. Someone please help!
The two of them had caused a scene sufficient to jeopardize the witch's new standing.
- Hekate Witch: Ugh! You watch your back, misthios. I'll have your head.
The witch attempted to attack Kassandra, but the guards stepped in and killed her.
- Aetios: W-what? I've known her all my life. She's a witch? That explains a lot...
Kallikleia sat down outside the pergola, and Aetios joined her. Kassandra spoke to her in passing.
- Kallikleia: Thank you, misthios... for everything.
- Kassandra: The witch is crazy but she did what you tried to do. Anything and everything to be with the one she loves. I can't fault her.
- Kallikleia: How could you say that after what she did to me?
- Kassandra: Know when you are beat. Go home. Well, pay me. Then go home.
- Hekate Witch: See? The misthios gets it. Come, my Aetios, my dear. Let us leave these peasants to their theatrics. We have a wedding to plan.
Outcome[]
Kassandra helped Kallikleia and the witch to retrieve the ingredients for a "love" potion. Later, she learned that it was a fraud and the witch had sought to marry Aetios herself.
Behind the scenes[]
If Kassandra did not identify the witch then spoke to Kallikleia afterwards, the woman expressed anger for siding against her. Afterward, Kassandra would receive a tier one bounty on her head for the "crime" of deception.
