Heads Will Roll was a virtual representation of one of Fujibayashi Naoe's genetic memories, relived through the Animus EGO.[1]
Description[]
Naoe meets with Kyonyo and Yaya outside Amagasaki for the next steps in eliminating Wada Koretake.
Dialogue[]
Naoe found the Ikkō-ikki in a meditation position, chanting nenbutsu.
- Kyonyo: Namu Amida Butsu. Namu Amida Butsu. Namu Amida Butsu.
- Yaya:' Namu Amida Butsu. Namu Amida Butsu. Namu Amida Butsu.
- Warrior Monk Archer: Namu Amida Butsu. Namu Amida Butsu. Namu Amida Butsu.
- Warrior Monk Shooter: Namu Amida Butsu. Namu Amida Butsu. Namu Amida Butsu.
- Warrior Monk: Namu Amida Butsu. Namu Amida Butsu. Namu Amida Butsu.
Naoe approached Kyonyo.
- Naoe: Ano... Kyonyo...
- Kyonyo: Ah, she returns. With news, I hope.
Naoe bowed to him as a greeting.
- Naoe: Wada Koretake is at Amagasaki Castle.
- Kyonyo: And what about Mitsumune?
Kyonyo stood up.
- Naoe: His people are exhausted and hungry, but they will fight.
- Yaya: You may as well sacrifice them. There must be a peaceful solution.
- Kyonyo: You confuse me for my father, Yaya. I never wanted peace. Not until we take back what's ours.
Naoe took out the statue of Shinran and offered it to Kyonyo.
- Kyonyo: Not until Wada Koretake is dead! Naoe, are you ready to finish what we started?
("I'm ready to fight.")
- Naoe: I am ready. Wada Koretake must die.
Yaya stood up as well.
- Yaya: I will not go to war for you. I will go to make sure you don't get Mitsumune killed.
- Naoe: We attack at nightfall, then. His stronghold will be less defended.
Kyonyo nodded in agreement then turned to face his followers.
- Kyonyo: Ready your blades. Send word to Nunobiki Falls. We march to Amagasaki Castle.
Later at nightfall, Naoe and the Kyonyo's men awaits outside the castle gate after eliminating the gatekeepers, awaiting Mitsumune's group.
- Yaya: He's not here. I hope Mitsumune came to his senses.
- Kyonyo: Maybe not.
Contrary to Yaya's guess, Mitsumune arrived from behind.
- Mitsumune: Yaya! I did not expect you.
- Kyonyo: She retired for a time to the forest. To commune with the birds.
- Yaya: I came to show Kyonyo which end of his naginata is the pointy one.
- Mitsumune: I considered giving up.
But we are here. Because of her.
Mitsumune turned to Naoe. She slowly got up and approached the castle gate.
- Yaya: It is not too late to turn back.
Naoe think back on the night of her father's death.
- Nagato: Promise me, plum.
- Wada Koretake: She's just a child.
- Naoe: I failed you.
- Wada Koretake: No! Let them suffer! Let them die in pain!
After thinking it through, Naoe made her decision.
- Naoe: No. We fight.
Kyonyo addressed his followers.
- Kyonyo: My brave sohei. Oda Nobunaga has brought us to the edge of extinction. Wada Koretake threatens to push us over!
Tonight, we end the destruction. We succeed, or we die fighting!
Naoe and the Ikkō-ikki then stormed the castle.
- Naoe: There he is. Vengeance is close, Father.
While the sohei fought against the foot soldiers, Naoe focused on the ashigaru shooters on the platforms.
- Naoe: Teppo. I must stop the shooters or Kyonyo's monks will die.
In the first area, Naoe helped the sohei eliminate the ashigaru shooters.
- Naoe: Now to stop the shooters on the other side.
Naoe headed to the next area and cleared the shooters on the ground, rooftops and platforms.
- Naoe: Now it's safe for the monks to push ahead. And for me to find Wada Koretake.
Naoe made her way to the courtyard where she found Koretake.
- Wada Koretake: I starved them! Set fire to their faces! Hung their children from trees! And yet their leader lives! Temple monks defeat my idiot samurai in battle! Hah! I will not return to Lord Nobunaga a liar! I will kill Kyonyo and his Buddha-worshipping dogs myself! Hah!
Naoe got near to Koretake and assassinated him from the roof. Koretake lay mortally wounded as Naoe, with blood stains on her face, interrogated him.
- Wada Koretake: (grunts)
- Naoe: Where is the box?
- Wada Koretake: (laughs)
Naoe kicked him.
- Wada Koretake: (screams)
- Naoe: Where?!
- Wada Koretake: (screams)
- Naoe: You cut open my father. You left him to suffer. To die pain!
- Wada Koretake: It's... what you... and your kind... deserve.
Angered, Naoe drew her Hidden Blade and stabbed Koretake in the chest, holding her blade in.
- Wada Koretake: (groans)
- Naoe: My father taught me to survive. And every day since, I have thought of only one thing. Make you suffer.
- Wada Koretake: (groans)
Naoe then left as Koretake slowly died from his wounds. Having started on her first step of revenge, Naoe left the courtyard and looked at the casualties from the resulting attack. She then witnessed Mitsumune and a monk preparing to execute a soldier.
- Naoe: Wait! Stop!
Mitsumune signalled his monk to put down his katana.
- Kyonyo: Mitsumune!
Kyonyo and Yaya arrived.
- Mitsumune: This is for every soul Oda Nobunaga burned alive. After they surrendered and were promised peace.
Yaya confronted Mitsumune.
- Yaya: No! This is Oda Nobunaga's way, not ours.
- Mitsumune: You give us blades. You tell us to defend the temple with our lives. Then you sign peace treaties with demons. Abandon us to slaughter!
And right when I am on the edge of despair, you send her.
Mitsumune turned to Naoe.
- Mitsumune: Tell them! These men don't deserve to live!
- Naoe: Mitsumune is right. Anyone fighting for Oda Nobunaga deserves death.
- Yaya: You are fools. I fought to keep Mitsumune safe, but he is beyond saving.
You all are.
Mitsumune proceed to signal his monk to execute the soldier.
- Warrior Monk: (screams)
The soldier fell dead in front of Yaya, with Naoe shocked by the act.
- Yaya: This... is your doing.
After saying those words to Kyonyo, Yaya left the castle.
- Kyonyo: Let these men go.
Mitsumune left with his follower. As he passed by Naoe, he whispered to her.
- Mitsumune: You said you were ready for blood. The veins of my people opened for you. I hope it was worth it.
With only her and Kyonyo left, Naoe pondered about her actions then spoke to Kyonyo.
- Naoe: How did you feel? When your father disowned you.
- Kyonyo: Lost.
- Naoe: When my father died, there was a moment when it felt like he was everywhere. All around me. The next moment, he was nowhere. I felt devoured by emptiness. I thought killing Wada Koretake would fill it.
Naoe look around at the dead monks and soldiers.
- Naoe: These men are dead because of me.
- Kyonyo: No. Because of Oda Nobunaga.
- Naoe: Maybe. Maybe this fight should be my own.
- Kyonyo: One of my duties as abbot is to entrust our sacred artifacts to those who need them most.
Kyonyo took out the statue and Shinran and handed it over to Naoe.
- Kyonyo: Shinran gave hope to thousands upon thousands. Despite what you feel now, Naoe, we are still breathing. There is still hope. That is what fills the emptiness.
Naoe kept the statue and looked at the body of the dead monk sitting against a bucket for a moment.
- Naoe: Thank you.
Naoe bowed to Kyonyo as a good bye. As she prepared to leave, she left words for the abbot.
- Naoe: I hope you and your father can one day forgive each other.
Outcome[]
Naoe entered Amagasaki Castle alongside the Ikkō-ikki, killing Koretake in her first step of avenging her father. As she reflected on her quest of vengeance, she was given the statue of Shinran by Kyonyo to remind her that there is hope.
