Hayashi (died 1580s) was a daimyō who governed Fukuchiyama in Tanba Province during the Sengoku period.[1]
Biography[]
As daimyō, Hayashi enacted extortionate taxes that drove his people's livelihoods to the ground, and when they failed to pay, they were threatened with violence by his samurai. Oda Nobunaga's retainer Yasuke investigated Hayashi's corruption and slew one of his samurai, Fujioka Jiro, in broad daylight after catching him harassing civilians in the streets. With a message retrieved from Fujioka's corpse, Yasuke and his kunoichi ally Fujibayashi Naoe validated Hayashi's culpability and targeted him for assassination.[1]
Intel gathered from their spies verified that Hayashi was present at his castle, and Naoe infiltrated it that night. She found him in his garden castigating a servant for Fujioka's sudden death and for serving him tea that he deemed too hot to drink. While he was still in the midst of venting, Naoe swam up from the pond behind him and killed him with her Hidden Blade.[1]
Personality and traits[]
By all accounts, Hayashi was a cruel and corrupt lord who enriched himself at the expense of his subjects. They feared him and his soldiers to the extent that they were willing to subvert his authority and secretly beseech the aid of a visiting samurai.[1]
He also had a few quirks. He suffered from insomnia and developed a habit of meandering his garden at night so often that his guards joked he would "dig himself a trench with those nightly footsteps", or as another portended, "a grave". In addition, he had a low tolerance for hot tea or was unaccustomed to drinking it. Despite the fact that tea is brewed with boiling water and served accordingly, he blamed the server who steeped it for burning his tongue and went as far as to threaten to cut off his tongue as punishment.[1]
