The Godai Shinobi (五大忍び) were a group of shinobi active during the late Sengoku period. The group were originally the elite of the Kōga-ryū ninjutsu school, being trained by the patriarch of the Rokkaku clan, Rokkaku Yoshikata.[1] The group's name came from the godai, the five elements that constitute reality as thought by Japanese Buddhism.[2] As such, each of its five members adopted one of those elements as their aliases: earth, fire, water, air, and void.[3]
After the fall of the Kōga-ryu and the Rokkaku clan, Rokkaku Yoshimitsu, son of Yoshikata, also known as Godai of the Void, forged an alliance between the shinobi and the Shinbakufu, with the former students being tasked with eliminating the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe, Yasuke, and Rokkaku Katsuhime, Yoshimitsu's step-sister. The plan ultimately failed, with the Kakushiba ikki instead killing all five members of the Godai Shinobi.[3]
