The Glorious Revolution (1688 – 1689) was the deposition of King James II of England in favour of his daughter Mary and her husband William of Orange, then ruler of the Dutch Republic. The virtually bloodless coup d'état was the culmination of decades of civil wars, cementing at last England's evolution into a constitutional monarchy.[1]
History[]
A large proportion of England's population were irate over the succession of James II to the throne in 1685 due to his overt Catholicism, which manifested in tolerance for Catholics and amiable relations with France.[2] The English Parliament feared that a Catholic dynasty was sure to follow his reign[2] when a son was born to his second wife, a Catholic.[1] Thus, they invited his Protestant daughter Mary and her husband William of Orange to invade from the Netherlands, where they were ruling at the time. King James II's regime collapsed almost without a fight, resulting in the ascension of Queen Mary II and William III of England.[1] After decades of conflict between Parliament and the monarchy over sovereignty,[1][3] the Glorious Revolution established the supremacy of the former.[1] Royal power was further curtailed with the enactment of the Bill of Rights while Catholics were barred from future succession to the throne.[2]
