"I am Gamo Yoshitmisu, descended of the great Fujiwara, most revered of all clans. The sacred blood of the Nakatomi, children of the kami, flows in our veins! And I will fight you to the death."
―Yoshimitsu to Yasuke before their duel, 1582.[src]-[m]

Gamo Yoshimitsu (蒲生 義光; died 1582) was a Japanese samurai who served as Akechi Kagemitsu's bodyguard during the late 16th century.[1] He was a member of the Gamō clan which claimed descent from the Fujiwara clan which, in turn, was descended from the Nakatomi clan.[2]

Biography[]

As Kagemitsu's personal bodyguard, Yoshimitsu was extremely loyal to his master, such that he was given his own personal residence in Sakamoto outside the castle.[2] In 1582, Yoshimitsu accompanied Kagemitsu to Seta Bridge in Ōtsu, where his lord was scheduled to duel Shōtei, the former daimyō of southern Omi and one of the late Oda Nobunaga's persistent rivals. In reality, the duel was meant to be an ambush to rid the land of Shōtei and bring southern Omi fully under Kagemitsu's control. However, the ambush was thwarted by the timely arrival of Nobunaga's former retainer Yasuke, causing Yoshimitsu to urge his lord to retreat. Kagemitsu agreed and fled back to the castle with Yoshimitsu.[3]

Later on, Yasuke, alongside his allies Fujibayashi Naoe, Shōtei, and Rokkaku Katsuhime, launched an attack on Sakamoto to eliminate Kagemitsu and his followers. At his own residence, Yoshimitsu was confronted by Yasuke and Shōtei, with the former requesting a duel to the death with the bodyguard, given their respective roles as samurai. Yoshimitsu accepted and the two gathered in the courtyard, each of them declaring their oaths. Ultimately, Yoshimitsu was bested by Yasuke, meeting his end at the rival samurai's blade. His death greatly weakened Kagemitsu's forces, resulting his lord's own downfall and death not long after.[2]
