Fushimi is a village situated in the city of Kyoto, Japan.

History[]

In January 1868, siblings Shiba Atsuko and Shiba Ibuka were sent on a mission by Atsuko's mentor Nakano Takeko to infiltrate a local village as peasants and poison their local well against the enemy army. When they arrived, they were greeted tremendously and even stayed for a wedding of Madoka and Keitaro. Spending the day celebrating the lucky couple, they later found shelter with the village's blacksmith Haku. Solemn, Atsuko disagreed with Takeko's plan and did not poison the well. However, while Atsuko was asleep, Ibuka secretly took a poison given to him and did the deed himself..[1]

Before they left, Haku tried to give them a gift for their visit. In response, Atsuko gifted Haku for his generousity before they departed. It was until later when Atsuko became disgusted of Ibuka's action that she promised to never speak with him again.[2] Right after the poisoning, the town became engulfed in the Battle of Toba–Fushimi, where the shogun's forces lost to the Imperial forces and their superior weaponry.[3]
