"You left Iga to seek out fortune, not honor. Forgive me if I question your loyalty or your motives for returning."
―Tanji questioning Hanzo's reason for returning to Iga, 1581.[src]-[m]

Furuta Tanji was a Japanese shinobi of the Iga ikki during the late 16th century.

Biography[]

On 30 September 1581, Tanji was present at the assembly in Aekuni Shrine where the group had gathered to renew their vows to the league. Early on during the meeting, the group was interrupted by the arrival of Hattori Hanzō, a senior member of the group who alerted them of the impending invasion by Oda Nobunaga. Given Hanzō's period of absence from Iga to serve under Tokugawa Ieyasu, Tanji questioned Hattori's loyalty and motives, believing he left the group seek out wealth instead of honor. In turn, Hanzo snapped back at Tanji, cautioning the shinobi to speak to his superior properly. Later on, Tanji and the group bore witness to a duel between Fujita Juro and Fujibayashi Nagato's daughter Naoe after the former questioned the girl's abilities as a warrior. After Naoe won the duel and the renewal of their league's vows,[1] Tanji and his fellow Igans went on to participate in the defense of their home against Nobunaga's army, being one of the few to survive the encounter.[2]

Less than a year later, Tanji participated in Naoe's plan to infiltrate Honnō-ji in order to assassinate Nobunaga. While Naoe hid inside the cart, Tanji posed as a rice farmer bringing shipments of rice for Nobunaga, presenting the documents needed for entry. After a moment of questioning by the guard and Nobunaga's retainer Yasuke, Tanji's cart was granted entry and parked in the southwestern corner of the complex.[3]
