A group of mercenaries were hired by the Hidden One Fuladh Al Haami to locate and track down an object of ancient technology carried by the Martyrs of Agaunum.

History[]

Formation[]

In 824, a group of experienced fighters and thieves met at a tavern in Fustat, where they were met by their employer, Master Assassin Fuladh, his apprentice, and a young thief Roshan. At the meeting, Fuladh also invited Persian mercenary Azadeh with her wolf companion Onyx, Viking twins Geir and Gud, Roman pirate Dias, Welsh mercenary Mared, Chinese rebel Wei, Samoan warrior Nafanua, and Christian self-proclaimed prophet Francis. Altogether, they all listened to Fuladh about their task, which was to track and attain an ancient artifact from a cult, the Martyrs of Agaunum.[1]

The mission[]

Supplied with weapons and rations, the group readied themselves while Fuladh and his apprentice took leave.[1] Together, they traveled and mapped out the Martyrs' trail while Roshan also composed of a plan to ambush them with a bomb constructed by Wei. Within a day, they traveled to a mountain passage and set up their ambush, with Wei ready with the bomb and Francis in charge of the signal. However, Francis signaled too early and the ambush went awry.[2] Amidst the explosion, the mercenaries, excluding Wei and Francis, fought off against the Martyrs and their guards. However, the Martyrs fled while the group lost Mared, who died in Dias' arms after being used as a human shield. A brief divide occurred mainly between the men and women, with the exception of Francis and Wei.[3]

With Azadeh calming down tensions, Roshan argued to go over the mountain towards the Red Sea and travel to Karachi to beat the Martyrs.[3] They all agreed and then they traveled across Sinai and came to the mountain. Organized into groups and Azadeh telling Onyx to go around, they soon climbed to the summit but then began their struggle on the descent on the other side of the mountain. Roshan, grouped with Azadeh and Wei, lost her steo and began to fall with her group, until Geir and Gud saved them. However, Gud stepped on some loose rocks, from which one fell on top of Wei's head and knocked him unconscious. Bleeding and fading in and out, Wei tried to hold on but fell before Roshan could save him.[4]

While they all later made the descent, most went to the dock nearby to steal a ship while Roshan and Azadeh went to find Wei's remains. After they found Wei's remains, along with Onyx waiting for them, Roshan took a jade figurine of Wei to gift back to his family in his village before returning with Azadeh and Onyx to their group. Aboard a stolen dhow, they all sailed for Karachi.[4] However, while sailing, both Roshan and Nafanua are nearly killed after being thrown overboard. Fortunately, both climbed aboard with Azadeh's help but both became hesistant with the other members. When they arrived in Karachi, Nafanua found a room at an inn for the group. While they all rested, Roshan left to find a new map for their mission. However, after finding a map, she realized that both Geir and Gud were stalking her.[5]

Roshan barely escaped their grasp and led them on a chase, which put them in the crosshairs of a harem and its guards. Within moments, the twins fought the guards to the death while Roshan tended to her wounds. She was later found by Azadeh and both went to the library to find more information about the Martyrs. They later found the tales of the Martyrs' immortality and their ties to the Theban Legion.[6] Soon, they returned back to the inn to inform the rest of the group. Upon entering the room, they informed Dias of their whereabouts and the new plan. However, while they all prepared, Roshan noticed Nafanua feeling sick but the warrior dismisses it before they leave. With new horses found by Francis, they all followed Onyx, who tracked the Martyrs' scent.[7]

Finding the traitor[]

However, they were all ambushed by mercenaries sent by the Martyrs, but Roshan, Azadeh, and Dias managed to kill them all. While Dias accused Francis of being the traitor, Roshan noticed Onyx besides a motionless Nafanua. Seeing the warrior dead, Roshan saw she was poisoned and also accused Francis of poison. After interrogating him for a moment, Francis admitted his allegiance to the Martyrs before escaping. Roshan admitted that she let him go in order to track him to the Martyrs. After Roshan buried Nafanua and took her weapon to return back to her family, they followed Onyx, who began to track Francis. Soon, they all found their way in Baghdad.[7]

The final task[]

They were able to track both Francis and the Martyrs at the House of Wisdom, thus they infiltrated and found the meeting between the Martyrs and their customer. While they saw the case given to the customer, they stationed themselves to ambush the Martyrs and noticed the customer open the case. However, the customer hissed at the Martyrs before Azadeh whistled a signal aloud. Immediately, Onyx attacked and killed Francis while Dias and Roshan took down two Martyrs with blows to their heads. However, the remaining Martyrs proved to be adept and almost killed Azadeh and Roshan. Fortunately, Onyx attacked Roshan's Martyr, only to sustain fatal wounds. Azadeh soon killed the Martyr while Roshan wounded the other. Instantly, the hooded stranger appeared and killed the wounded Martyr.[8]

While the stranger went to attack the customer, Dias managed to kill his Martyrs, ultimately dismantling the cult. After killing the last one, Dias went for the case and opened it himself, only to activate the explosive hidden within it. Instantly killing Dias, the explosion temporaily disoriented everyone left. While Azadeh mourned her wolf, Roshan watched the stranger kill the customer.[8]

Disbandment[]

With Azadeh and Roshan left, the stranger admitted their job was done. The stranger told an upset Azadeh that her father was cured, but offered Roshan a chance to join him in his organization. Against Azadeh's pleas, Roshan said her goodbye to her and accepted the offer. Before they left for Alamut, the stranger revealed himself as Fuladh while he welcomed Roshan into the Hidden Ones.[8]
