Francisco de la Cuesta (1661 – 1724) was the twelfth Archbishop of Manila from 1707 to 1722 and acting Governor-General of the Philippines from 1719 to 1721.[1]
Biography[]
In 1719, then-Governor-General Fernando Manuel de Bustillo Bustamante y Rueda had de la Cuesta and his monks rounded up and imprisoned after de la Cuesta refused to surrender people with pending criminal charges who sought refuge in Manila Cathedral. In response, the Archbishop's congregation stormed the Governor-General's mansion and murdered him in the streets.[2] Following Fernando's assassination, de la Cuesta succeeded him as the new Governor-General.[1]
