Fornburg
Fornburg was a Viking settlement in the south of Rygjafylke, Norway, which served as the home to the Raven Clan during the 9th century.
History[]
The territory where Fornburg was situated had been reportedly ruled by the family of King Styrbjorn since "the days Odin himself walked" the Earth.[1] In 872, Guthorm the Wise visited the settlement to meet with Styrbjorn and discuss the possibility of an alliance between the Raven Clan and Guthorm's nephew, King Harald Fairhair. Shortly after, Styrbjorn spoke with his adoptive daughter, Eivor Varinsdottir, who had returned to the settlement after one of her failed raids against Kjotve and the Wolf Clan.[2]
Styrbjorn and Eivor's conversation was interrupted by the news of Sigurd's return to Fornburg after a two-year expedition abroad, prompting the clan to head to the docks to welcome him.[2] After Sigurd introduced his family to his new friends, the Hidden Ones Basim Ibn Ishaq and Hytham, a feast was organized in his honor, during which Eivor was gifted a Hidden Blade by her brother and practiced with it under Basim's guidance.[3] Later that night, Eivor caught several Wolf Clan spies trying to infiltrate Fornburg and eliminated them before reporting to Styrbjorn and Sigrud, the latter of whom decided to retaliate despite his father's protests.[4]
Following the unification of Norway under King Harald, Sigurd, Eivor and other members of the Raven Clan who refused to swear allegiance to the king left Fornburg and sailed to England in search of better prospects. Meanwhile, the settlement was occupied by Harald's soldiers,[5] though by the late 870s, Fornburg had become largely abandoned.[6]
