Aleister Crowley assaulting Florence Farr

Florence Farr (1860 – 1917) was an English feminist writer who was involved in many arts, among them acting, singing, and the production of plays. She was also a leader of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

Biography[]

After William Wynn Westcott retired from the Order, Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers had Farr take his place as leader in England.

While at the Isis-Urania Temple in London, Mathers' protege, Aleister Crowley, came demanding she allow him into the Inner Order. When she refused, Crowley jumped onto her desk, shouting and raising his fist. Seeing her terrified response, Crowley began laughing.

Mathers eventually initiated Crowley into the Inner Order, starting a rift that led to Farr's departure from the Order.

Trivia[]

  • While recounting Crowley's attack on Farr, William Robert Woodman refers to her as "Miss Farras", "Miss Farrat", and "Miss Farris".
