Gameplay[]
The game features a headquarters for the Brotherhood where Assassins can be trained and new items and equipment can be crafted. As the player levels up their brotherhood, additional rooms and other content become available, opening up new upgrade options.[2]
The player can also send teams of three Assassins on various infiltration missions. Different skills and character combinations are better suited to some missions than others. In addition, the type of missions completed will have an effect on how the Assassins develop: standard missions are key for gathering resources to upgrade the player's Assassins, while Loot missions will earn materials for crafting. New Assassins are unlocked by collecting their DNA fragments in Story or Legacy missions.[2]
Development[]
Version 1.0.0 (2017-2018)[]
The first official confirmation of the game's development came on 27 June 2017, when the newly-created Facebook page for Assassin's Creed: Rebellion cross-posted the game's teaser trailer from YouTube.[3][4] This was shortly followed with the release of the official key art.[5] No further progress updates were seen until 30 August, when the Facebook page announced that the game was live in New Zealand.[6]
Even while being tested by the public in open beta mode, the development team behind Rebellion continually provided software updates to the game, allowing for new features to be tested and removing potential bugs in real-time. The first patch, Update 1.2.0, was released on 26 September. It featured free Daily Login Rewards, Daily Objectives, and the return of achievements. Unlike in past installments, these achievements are tiered, increasing in difficulty and reward rarity as one advances to the next level. In place of PS4 trophies or Xbox points, Rebellion rewards the player with the two in-game currencies of coin and Helix credits, and DNA fragments for Claudia Auditore.[7]
Update 1.3.1, released on 20 December, introduced Rush Mode, which allowed players to instantly reap mission rewards without having to wait for a team member's next availability, provided the group met or exceeded the mission requirements. The base character and gear stats were increased or decreased in order that the game be a balanced experience for players, and the character profile pages were revamped. Instead of just the three classes of Enforcer, Shadow, and Specialist, they were divided into 9 sub-categories to permit for further role specialization, as outlined in the table below.[8]
Shadow | Specialist | Enforcer |
---|---|---|
Assassination | Disarm | Area of Effect (AOE) |
Stealth | Support | Damage per Second (DPS) |
Navigation | Heal | Tank |
Update 1.4.0, released on 9 March 2018, introduced various features related to mission speed. Auto Play let the game's algorithm choose what Heroes to send into a room and what actions to take, and Speed Up increased animation speed by twice or triple the default rate according to player preference. Players could now refresh the Daily Selection to "buy" more DNA fragments or resources using the in-game currencies, allowing for faster progression, as well as customize their Assassin Headquarters layout. Further, this update revealed that Rifts would return in the form of Helix Rift Events.[9] The first Helix Event was announced on 19 March, and lasted from 30 April–6 May. Titled Horacio's Retribution, it followed Horacio de Heredia's joining the Spanish Brotherhood, and set the standard for how Helix Events would operate. Described as a breakthrough in Animus experiences, Helix Events were special simulations that permitted the mixing of two different sets of genetic memories, Aguilar's and the Event's subject(s) of interest, who often were in different time periods and locations than those in the main campaign. Time-limited, Events relied on Helix Rift Tokens in order to play instead of regular Intelligence, and were restricted to players Level 7 and above. Completion of a Helix mission would grant players Data Nodes, which would unlock various tiers of rewards based on the total number collected, with the ultimate goal of earning enough DNA fragments of the event-exclusive Heroes in order to recruit them. In addition, playing Events with certain Heroes would award extra Nodes, pushing players to recruit Assassins as quickly as possible.[10]
Update 1.5.0, released on 9 June, revamped room gameplay by adding new obstacles such as lifts, ziplines, and tripwires, and expanded individual maps, allowing for multiple routes to reach the end. All missions now required Intel Pieces and had Daily Limit caps, forcing players to consider alternative methods to gathering certain resources or DNA fragments. The conditions to unlock Rush Mode were changed from simply meeting mission requirements, to playing a regular quest and earning 3 Stars for keeping all three Assassins alive by mission's end. Last, this update formally promoted the pending release of a limited-time Helix Event that would give players DNA and equipment for exclusive characters.[11] To the relief of many, developers reassured players that Helix Events would likely reoccur later for those who did not have a chance to earn all the rewards.[12]
On 8 August, update 1.6.1 was released, introducing Helix Rift Challenges designed for a specific Role Specialization. Players could brilliantly complete missions to collect Stars and unlock valuable rewards. Additionally, the update made it possible to Rush Helix Rift missions, and various bug fixes and improvements were implemented.[13]
Update 1.7.0, released on 21 September, revealed The Ottoman Connection as the next Helix Event and introduced the Animus Challenges and Animus Boosts features in the Helix Events menu. Time-limited to a couple of days, Animus Challenges were an ever-changing set of optional tasks to complete that upon completion would reward players with Helix credits and DNA Cube fragments. Animus Boosts are benefits that apply to various headquarters activities on certain days of the week and initially only lasted between the hours of 10-11 AM and 4-5 PM. In chronological order, the bonuses are:[14]
- Mondays: +25% Codex Rewards from standard missions
- Tuesdays: +25% Crafting Material Rewards from loot missions
- Wednesdays: +25% XP from all Codex
- Thursdays: 25% off crafting coin cost
On 5 October 5, update 1.7.1 was released, featuring the introduction of Animus Challenges, where players could complete diverse tasks within a time limit for extra rewards. The update also included new Animus Boosts, offering additional rewards or discounted HQ tasks during bonus hours, as well as a new Rift Event and Rift Challenges. The progression system for Heroes was revised, unlocking all Hero Skills at Rank 1 and improving them with the Hero’s Rank, while also increasing Heroes' Stats gain on Rank Up for a more intuitive and balanced progression between Role Specializations in the Power Score.[13]
Version 2.0.0 (2018-2021)[]
On 11 October, it was announced that the open beta was in its final stages and that players could pre-register for the game's full release on 21 November 2018 in order to earn exclusive rewards.[15] From 21-30 November, inclusive, any players who had pre-registered for early access could claim their rewards, which were based on the total number of users registered. Any previous reward tiers would be added to their account as they were unlocked:[16][17]
- 5,000 coins and 300 Helix credits (500,000 players)
- 10 DNA Cube Tokens and the Ritualistic Xiphos (1,000,000 players)
- 10,000 coins, 20 DNA Cube Tokens, and the Myrmidon Spear (2,000,000 players)
- Players could add Mario Auditore to their team (3,000,000 players)
By 7 November, the necessary two million users had registered to unlock the third reward tier,[17] and by 16 November, all rewards had been unlocked.[18] For players who had already downloaded the game, thus bypassing the need to pre-register, the developers assured that they would only need play the game any time between the aforementioned dates in order to claim the rewards.[19] It was during this time that the Animus Premium Access subscription was revealed. For the monthly fee of $9 USD, or the equivalent in the regional currency, players could further their game progression by earning a 20% increase on Daily Login and Daily Objective rewards, 20% faster regeneration rate of Rift Tokens, and 20% faster timers in all headquarter rooms.[20] As part of a promotion celebrating the release of Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, Alexios and Kassandra were added to the Hero roster.[21] Between that, on 9 November, the next major version, Update 2.0.0 was released marking the official addition of the Animus Premium Access subscription as well as some revision Sync Bonus Heroes and various other fixes, optimizations and improvements. Each day of the week includes different rewards and different Hero Class requirements to complete the Missions, with Sundays including multiple Bounties to participate in. The missions are free to play, however, failed Missions will require 10 Helix Credits to retry. Missions can only be completed once per day. In the same update, the crafting material for Murat Bin Husn's sword Branded Kilij was changed from ruby to malachite. Similarly, the T5 weapons' crafting material for Luis Chico and Apollodorus were changed from Toledo steel to Damascus steel.[25] On 2 October, Adéwalé was announced to be added as a new playable hero in a re-run of Echoes Through the Animus starting October 22.[26] On 5 October, leading up to the release of Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, the official Assassin's Creed: Rebellion Twitter account posted a single photo of a Viking shield and ivory horn on a pile of snow.[27] In mid-October, the account posted a gif of the game's Assassin insignia logo colored cyan against a stone wall surrounded by embers, and revealed that new content related to Valhalla would arrive in November to coincide with the main game's release.[28] A minor update for some fixes was released on 19 October.[22] On 27 October, the account posted a picture of Aguilar blowing the horn, as if "summoning" the upcoming Valhalla content.[29]
Two days later, the account posted a gif of a longship sailing at night under the northern lights and announced that the Valhalla-themed content would be a new Helix Rift Event titled The Ravens' Wound, which would last from 19–24 November.[30] On 5 November, five days before Valhalla's release, the account posted a picture of two silhouetted figures on either side a wooden Odin statue and announced that two new heroes would be added to players' rosters;[31] the next day, the figures were revealed to be both the female and male versions of Eivor.[32] Both Eivors' skills and weapons information were posted to the Ubisoft forums on 12 [33] and 13 November, respectively.[34] Version 2.12.0 was later released on 17 November.[22] On 30 November, Rebellion's Helix Rift schedule for the month of December was released, which notably featured a "mega-event" that would unlock a new hero as Echoes Through the Animus aired over the Christmas break.[35]
Shortly after on 3 December, Rebellion's Discord server surpassed 10,000 members, and in celebration, developers gifted players with 10,000 coins.[36][37] On 11 December, a bigger picture of the silhouetted hero for Echoes Through the Animus was posted to Twitter,[38] before it was revealed as Evie Frye on 15 December.[39] Her skills and weapon details were posted on the Ubisoft forum two days later.[40] A minor fix came on 21 December.[22]
In celebration of the New Year, Rebellion's Helix Rift schedule for January 2021 was released on 31 December 2020. Like December, it also featured a new hero in a mega-event at the month's end, this time in The Mask of the Ibis.[41] On 8 January, 2021, a bigger picture of the silhouetted hero for The Mask of the Ibis was posted to Twitter,[42] before it was revealed as Cleopatra on 11 January.[43] Her skills and weapon details were posted to the Ubisoft forums three days later.[44]
Version 3.0.0 (2021-present)[]
On 29 January, Rebellion's Helix Rift schedule for the month of February was released. In the developer's notes, they said that while there would be no new hero that month, Update 3.0.0 would be coming in March and more information would be revealed in time.[45]
A week later on 4 February, Rebellion's Twitter account posted details on the next update and a teaser image, announcing that a new campaign mode would be included featuring missions from the Valhalla tie-in Helix Event The Ravens' Wound, and that six new heroes would be added to the roster.[46] Over the next few weeks, the heroes were gradually revealed to be Bogi Three-Fingers,[47] Dalla Aegirsdottir,[48] Guthlaugr Stone-Eye,[49] Jora Blood-Shoulder,[50] Valka,[51] and Basim Ibn Ishaq.[52]
On 4 March, it was announced that the next update would be available the next week on 9 March, and that details were already posted on the Ubisoft forums.[53] Besides giving the skills and concept models for the six heroes as well as a new weapon, the largest change would be a new gameplay feature called Campaign Mode. Made up of a repeating cycle of The Ravens' Wound missions now titled Norway, 872 CE, completing the levels would reward players with DNA fragments for any two of the six new Heroes, with difficulty increasing as players beat successive entries. Notably, however, a player's roster for a single completed mission would be locked from further use in Campaign Mode, encouraging players to quickly level up their other heroes and to maximize the abilities of what heroes they had in order to earn as many DNA fragments as possible. As an additional difficulty, all heroes were required to survive the mission, else it would be automatically failed. Heroes could be unlocked for future use in Campaign Mode by spending Sync Tokens, though the mission would have to be replayed with a new roster and the Sync Token cost rose with every successive desynch.[54] Apollodorus was also added as a Hero in the interim in a rerun of The Mask of the Ibis.[55]
Except for a patch on 24 March that fixed a number of bugs which could not be included in Update 3.0.0,[56] there would be no major developments until 13 April, when a silhouetted hero was announced for the upcoming megaevent during The Ravens' Wound at month's end,[57] before it was revealed as Sigurd Styrbjornsson two days later.[58] His skills and weapon details were posted on the Ubisoft forums 5 days later, on 20 April.[59]
On 3 May, Rebellion's Helix Rift schedule for the rest of the month, with developers adding that a new hero would be released at the end during the Echoes Through the Animus Event.[60] On 11 May, a picture of the silhouetted hero was posted to Twitter,[61] before it was revealed as Jacob Frye on 14 May.[62] His skills and weapon details were posted on the Ubisoft forum four days later.[63]
On 1 June, a picture of a beachside merchant stall was posted to Twitter, teasing a new Campaign that would debut later that month, featuring the return of Edward Kenway as he helped the crew of the Sea Dog's Bite recover a ship captured by rival pirates.[64] Like with the Campaign Mode set in Norway, the promotions for the new Campaign also had a number of new heroes. Over the next few weeks, the heroes were gradually revealed to be the pirate Irekanni,[65] the merchant Jibral Bin Said,[66] the scholar Heloise,[67], the French adventurer Jacquotte Jolicoeur[68] and her father Ivo,[69] and King Leonidas I of Sparta.[70] All of their database entries and skills were posted to the Ubisoft forums on 17 June along with the developer notes for Update 3.1.0, which also stated that the new in-game feature of a Helix Event calendar function meant future monthly schedules would no longer be shared online.[71]
After reports surfaced of a leaderboard glitch during an earlier rerun of The Ottoman Connection, developers announced on 28 June that a patch would be implemented in Update 3.1.1 and offered all players a compensation of 100 Rift Tokens.[72] On 5 July, Rebellion's Twitter account passed 10,000 followers, and to celebrate the milestone, developers gave players a reward of 20,000 coins and 20 intel.[73] The next day, a new silhouetted figure was posted online for the upcoming rerun of The Hunter's Hounds,[74] and as players attempted to guess the identity, Update 3.1.1 was released as promised,[75] then was followed on 7 July with the reveal that the hero was Alkibiades.[76] His database entry and skills were posted to the Ubisoft forums a week later.[77] Also at this time, Rebellion's Discord server surpassed 15,000 members, and in celebration again, developers gifted players with 15,000 coins and 30 intel.[78] Over the next month, a patch was released 22 July with Update 3.1.2,[79] and players both received a third summer reward of 20,000 coins on 3 August in celebration of the season,[80] before another patch was released a week later in Update 3.1.3, which fixed two major issues concerning incorrect DNA Cube rewards and a soft-locking glitch.[81]
On 23 August, a new image of an Italian domed cathedral was posted to Twitter, teasing another Campaign that would debut later in September. According to developers, it would follow Claudia Auditore as she recovered weapons in Naples for Ezio and his mercenaries to use in the liberation of Rome from Rodrigo Borgia and his family's hold on power.[82] As before, the Campaign also had new heroes, and over the next few weeks they were gradually revealed to be the seamstress Elena Niccolini,[83] the former Inquisitor knight Grazia,[84] the mercenary Tosca Yayal-Ricci,[85] the Venitian courtesan Teodora Contanto,[86] the mercenary Bartolomeo d'Alviano,[87] and the Italian polymath Leonardo da Vinci[88] (a signature weapon for da Vinci the "Vibrant Palette" was released on 14 September[89]). All of their database entries and skills were posted the next day to the Ubisoft forums in the developer notes for Update 3.2.0.[90]
With the exception of 5 more missions being announced for the Norway Campaign on 14 October and delayed a day later,[91] there would be no news for the next month until 18 October when Update 3.2.1 was announced.[92][93] The update included some minor bug fixes, the release of Missions 26-30 for the Norway campaign, as well as a teased Halloween special surprise.[94] A week later, a silhouetted figure was posted online[95] before being revealed on 27 October as La Volpe, who could be unlocked in the upcoming rerun of A War in the Shadows.[96]
On 2 November, Rebellion's social media posted a picture marking the start of Diwali and said that players could earn daily rewards over the next five days in celebration of the holiday.[97] On 30 November, Missions 26-30 were added to the Caribbean Campaign.[98]
Update 3.2.2, released on 10 January 2022, added Facebook connectivity as well as the ability to invite friends to play. Another feature was the Elite Training Happy Hour, in which on Fridays Elite Training Coins would become 15% off. Ratonhnhaké:ton was added as a Hero in Update 3.3.0, released on 15 February.[99]
March and April saw only two minor updates, the Update 3.4.0 was released on 17 May and added Arno Dorian to the list of Heroes. From June to September only three minor fixes were issued.[99]
On 15 November, Update 3.5.1 saw the introduction of the new Roguelike Gauntlet Event and Mentor Ezio. In this event, players assembled a team of three Heroes to tackle up to 10 randomized missions, each growing progressively challenging. The update allowed customization of gameplay by creating optimal Boon combinations to enhance Heroes and facilitate progression. Players could engage in leaderboard competitions to acquire DNA Fragments for Mentor Ezio from Assassin's Creed: Revelations and play missions to earn Gauntlet Cube Tokens for the opportunity to recruit four new Heroes.[99] The update also introduced 4 new heroes that could only be unlocked via the Gauntlet; Hipparkhia, Chimalmat, Jock MacRae, and Gunnar.[100]
The last pushed updates were in January and March of 2023 and only fixed minor issues.[99] There was also a celebration in November for the mobile game's fifth anniversary.[101]
