Domnall mac Áeda (died 915) was a King of Aileach. He was the son of Áed Findliath and the half-brother of Niall Glúndub, with whom he shared kingship of Aileach.

Biography[]

Around 881, Kings Domnall and Niall was visited by a Donegal stranger, who was really the Viking jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir. Kings Niall and Domnall asked their stranger why she came. Within their conversation, the kings remained aloof as Eivor and her "drunk" cousin, Bárid mac Ímair gave each other coded messages about the situation. Kings Domnall and Niall later attended to Bárid as Eivor left to take over Aileach.[1]

Quickly, Kings Domnall and Niall were taken as hostages as Eivor entered back into the kings' room. Under interrogation, King Domnall revealed that Eogan pressured him and King Niall to make sure Flann doesn't check out the area of Aileach. Both Kings Niall and Domnall admitted that Eogan was building an army to march to Clogher. Kings Domhall and Niall were kept as prisoners while Bárid sent warnings to Flann.[1]

Around 882, after the defeat and death of the Ollamh Druid, Abbot Eogan,[2] King Domnall was one of the kings of Ireland of a meeting in Durrow that summoned High King Flann. In the meeting, an initial decision was made to enforce a druid inquisition after the recent events with Eogan and the Children of Danu.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

Domnall is a historical character in Assassin's Creed: Valhalla's Wrath of the Druids DLC. Historically, Domnall only ascended to the throne of Ailech in 887 after succeeding two previous kings after the death of Áed Findliath, while his brother Niall Glúndub did not rule with him until 896. In the events of the DLC which takes place between 879 and 882, Domnall and Niall are portrayed as co-kings of Aileach.
