Colchester (Old English: Colcestre) is a historic market town in Essex, England. It was, for a time, the capital city of the Roman province of Britannia and lays claim to be regarded as one of Britain's oldest town.
History[]
Early history[]
The area surrounding what is now Colchester was inhabited by the Celtic tribe of Trinovantes which[1], prior to Gaius Julius Caesar's invasion in the 1st century BCE, was considered the most powerful tribe in Britain.[2] Following Romans conquest of Great Britain in 43 CE, the Romans occupied the settlement and convert it into a fortress to defend against the Celtic attacks for the next six years.[1]
In 49 CE, the fort was dismantled and converted into a town by the soldiers who married the natives and settled the land.[1] The town then came to be known as Camulodunum and served as the provincial capital of the province for the next decade.[3] In 61 CE, the town was destroved by Queen Boudicca of the Iceni tribe during her rebellion against the Roman Empire,[4] but was eventually rebuilt, following which Lunden replaced Camulodunum as the new capital of the province.[3] At this point during Emperor Claudius's reign, the city also came to be known as Colonia Claudia and was home to a temple dedicated to the Roman Emperor.[5]
In the late 1st century, the Hidden Ones chose Camulodunum as the location of one of its bureaus as part of their plans to expand throughout the Roman Empire.[6]
Anglo-Saxon period[]
In the 9th century, the town was visited by the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir after its ealdorman, Birstan, called for help. In 875, Eivor was contracted to stage a kidnap of Birstan's wife, Lady Estrid, in order for them to be free of their restraints of their arranged marriage.[7] With the help of Rollo, Eivor followed through with the shadow play during the Lammas festival in the city and successfully stole Estrid.[8] Birstan later welcomed his old flame, Alfida, into his house, and threw a party to their rekindled romance.[9]
At some moment, Eivor inspected the city as she recovered clues about one of the Order of the Ancients members, The Sickle. Discovering The Sickle's identity to be Heika of Friesland, Eivor found that her workplace happened to be at a bakery in the city's marketplace. After locating Heika, she assassinated the palatinus and ended her work for the order.[6]
