The ruins above water

The Dyspontion Ruins was the non-submerged part of the ruined town founded by the perioikoi, non-citizen inhabitants of Sparta, located in the Forgotten Swamps of Elis, Greece. Connected to them was the submerged part of the ruins.

Located by the mountainous route between the Sanctuary of Olympia and Elis City, the community was known for joining Pisa in a revolt against Elis in 570 BCE. As a consequence, the community was destroyed and abandoned.[1]

At some point over the following century, the Followers of Ares laid a claim on the ruins and begun to haunt the dilapidated buildings. Led by a witch, the Followers imprisoned an Elean actor, who had wandered near the place in search of inspiration for his next role as Xerxes I of Persia in the play by Thespis during the Peloponnesian War.[2]

Fortunately for the actor, the Spartan misthios Kassandra discovered the ruins as well as him soon after. In addition to him, Kassandra also released some caged soldiers, slew the chief of the Followers, and claimed the Followers' valuables. While within the ruins, she also discovered an ancient tablet on the site.[2][3]
