Bottlenose dolphins

The bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops) is a genus of dolphins. Bottlenose dolphins are aquatic mammals and highly intelligent. They can be found worldwide in most warm seas.

History[]

5th century BCE[]

Bottlenose dolphins were plentiful within the Aegean Sea during the time of ancient Greece, swimming alongside ships like Barnabas' trireme Adrestia and even accompanying swimming humans like the Spartan misthios Kassandra.[1]

During the Peloponnesian War, the Athenian trireme Delos was adorned with dolphin imagery.[1]

Aletheia's simulation of Atlantis[]

During Kassandra's travels to Aletheia's simulation of Atlantis, she encountered numerous golden statues of bottlenose dolphins at the Palace of Poseidon.[2]

18th century[]

During the 18th century, the pirate-turned-Assassin Edward Kenway shared the Caribbean Sea also with dolphins.[3]

Significance[]

During the 5th century BCE, the banner of Phokis featured dolphins flanking a golden tripod.[1]

Trivia[]

  • According to a Greek legend, the god Apollo had the Sanctuary of Delphi established by appearing to priests in the form a of a dolphin.
