The Feathered Forest (羽林; Mandarin: Yǔlín) was a long-standing force of royal guards in imperial China. They were chiefly responsible for security at the imperial palaces, particularly serving as a night patrol unit. During the Tang dynasty, they were divided into left and right wings and were known collectively with the left and right wings of the Army of Dragon Warriors as the Four Armies of the Northern Gate (北門四軍).[1]
At the Flower Banquet of 754,[2] Right Chancellor Yang Guozhong left his victorious team of contestants waiting outside the Flower and Calyx Pavilion all night unable to join in the festivities.[3] Idling around the Gazebo of Submerged Fragrance,[3] they were assassinated by the Hidden One Li E for their massacre of Duling village,[4] and their corpses were discovered soon after by one of Guozhong's servants, who promptly had the Feathered Forest clean-up the crime scene to await further orders from the chancellor.[1] When the servant reported this privately to Guozhong, the chancellor instructed him to order the Feathered Forest to quietly search for the murderer while keeping the news from leaking so as not to spoil the Emperor's party.[1]
Although the Feathered Forest scoured every building on the palace grounds and guarded all the gates, they were unable to locate Li E, for he eluded them from the rooftops.[1] Unbeknownst to them, their culprit slipped right by them in a peony carriage driven out of the palace by the young scholar Yan Jiming, son of Grand Protector Yan Gaoqing of Changshan, and his chauffeur Chen Wu. They were unwilling to search the carriage due to the Yan family's status.[5]
