Jacob: "London is waiting to be liberated. Forget Crawley."
Evie: "Father would have wanted us to listen."
Jacob: "Oh. Father. You could continue his legacy in London."
Evie: "Freeing future generations from a city ruled by Templars. You know, Jacob Frye, you might just be right."
—Evie talking to her brother, 1868.[src]-[m]

Dame Evie Frye (born 1847) was a Master Assassin of the British Brotherhood during the Victorian era, and the elder twin sister of Jacob Frye. She later became a member of Queen Victoria's Order of the Sacred Garter. She is also an ancestor of the scientist and Assassin Jackie O'Connell.[1]

Born in Crawley, Evie and her brother were raised and trained in the Assassins' ways by their widowed father Ethan. Unlike the carefree Jacob, Evie took her training very seriously and relished in their father's teachings. Due to her preference for stealth over combat, she also tended to meticulously plan out her approach ahead of each mission, which often put her at odds with Jacob due to their conflicting methods.

Following her father's death in 1868, Evie, wishing to continue his legacy, accompanied Jacob to London, against their superiors' wishes. There, they sought to liberate the city from the Templars' control and help the poverty-stricken masses. To accomplish this, they founded the Rooks, a criminal syndicate that opposed the Templar-backed Blighters.

While Jacob focused on eliminating targets instrumental to Grand Master Crawford Starrick's operations, Evie pursued the Shroud of Eden, an Isu artifact hidden within the city. In doing so, she worked alongside fellow Assassin Henry Green and regularly came into conflict with the Templar Lucy Thorne. During her mission, Evie also came to understand the disadvantages of her approach to dealing with the Templars, and learned to rely more on her own thoughts instead of blindly following her father's teachings.

After she and Jacob assassinated Starrick to prevent him from misusing the Shroud, Evie married Henry and migrated with him to India while her brother stayed behind to rebuild the London Brotherhood. However, she would be forced to return to London in 1888, to stop the reign of terror of Jack the Ripper, one of Jacob's Assassin apprentices who had gone rogue and seized control of the Rooks.

Prior to the outbreak of World War I, Evie and Jacob tutored and trained the latter's granddaughter Lydia in the absence of her parents. In 1914, as the war reached London, the elderly Fryes were relocated to the countryside by the Brotherhood while Lydia remained in the city to defend it from the returning Templars.

Biography[]

Early life[]

"Oh, right, my mistake. Ladies and gentlemen, the unstoppable Frye twins; see them nightly at Covent Garden!"
―George Westhouse sarcastically scolding the twins, 1868.[src]-[m]

Evie Frye was born in Crawley, England on 9 November 1847, four minutes before her brother Jacob. The twins' mother Cecily died during childbirth and their father Ethan, needing time to mourn and recover from the loss, traveled to India, leaving his children to be raised by their maternal grandmother until the age of six. In 1853, Ethan returned to Crawley and began to personally raise and train Evie and Jacob as Assassins.[2]

Despite displaying more potential than her brother, Evie often found herself bored by their combat training. While Jacob spent his days in their home's yard, practicing the moves taught by Ethan in the morning, Evie would sneak away to Ethan's study to read about the Brotherhood's history. Studying chronicles of legendary Assassins such as Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, Ezio Auditore, Edward Kenway, Adéwalé, Aveline de Grandpré, Arno Dorian and Arbaaz Mir inspired in her a desire to discover the knowledge kept within the fabled Pieces of Eden.[3]

In her teenage years, Evie used her skills to eavesdrop on conversations between Ethan and George Westhouse, learning about the extent of the Templars' control over London. At night, Evie would relay the information she had gathered to Jacob, and the twins would excitedly talk about the day when they would finally be introduced to the Assassins' iconic Hidden Blade.[3]

When their training transitioned to learning about the Brotherhood's history, tactics and policy, Evie found herself more interested in Ethan's lessons than her brother.[3] While Evie trained with Ethan late at night, a bored Jacob took to exploring factories and gambling dens in Crawley and beyond, often getting into trouble while doing so.[4] In time, Evie came to greatly admire her father, viewing him as a wise mentor, and despite her love for her brother, both she and Ethan considered Jacob too reckless to become a great Assassin.[5]

In 1862, Evie greeted the Indian Assassin Ajay when he came to the Frye household and handed her a cryptic letter for Ethan before leaving abruptly. Sensing something was amiss, Ethan decided to pursue Ajay, bringing Evie, Jacob and George Westhouse along.[6] After cornering the Indian Assassin, Ajay apologized to Ethan before committing suicide.[7] Later, Evie eavesdropped on a conversation between her father and George, learning that Ajay's letter warned Ethan that his apprentice, known only as "The Ghost", was in danger.[8]

During this time, Evie befriended the Assassin Pierrette Arnaud, who regularly visited the Frye household and trained alongside her. However, the two lost contact with each other after Pierrette relocated to Cairo, Egypt in 1867.[9]

After completing her training, Evie carried out her first mission for the Brotherhood: the assassination of an abusive mill owner who refused to provide adequate wages to his workers. The mill owner was subsequently replaced by an Assassin, who greatly improved the conditions.[2] Evie and Jacob were also partnered with George Westhouse on several assignments in and around Crawley.[10] Unlike her brother, who liked to approach situations head-on without thinking of the consequences, Evie was valued by her fellow Assassins for her thoughtful planning and problem-solving abilities.[2]

Activities in Croydon[]

"I know when we're ready better than any Council, and we are ready. Henry will provide. Jacob and Evie will act."
―A dying Ethan Frye to George Westhouse, 1868.[src]

In January 1868, Ethan passed away after a long battle with pleurisy, during which Evie and Jacob had been restricted from seeing their father too often, as he did not wish to be a burden on them. On the day of Ethan's death, George Westhouse was the first to discover his body and went to deliver the news to the twins, but to his surprise, he found them wearing their Assassin attires, as if they had already sensed what had happened and knew that the time had come to carry on their father's legacy.[11]

After staying in their home's kitchen in silence for several minutes, George left to notify the Brotherhood of Ethan's death while Evie and Jacob continued to console each other. The twins and George were subsequently the only Assassins to attend Ethan's funeral, which was quiet and inconspicuous in accordance to the Brotherhood's tradition.[11]

Evie finding Brewster experimenting on the Apple of Eden

Following her father's death, Evie sought to live up to the wisdom of his teachings, which became a cornerstone of her personal creed.[2] On 10 February 1868, Evie and Jacob accompanied George to Croydon, where the twins were tasked to assassinate two Templar targets: Rupert Ferris and David Brewster.[12] While Jacob killed Ferris, Evie planned her infiltration of a Starrick Telegraph Company train yard, where Brewster was experimenting on an Apple of Eden.[13]

Infiltrating a train headed towards the yard, Evie deployed a diversion by detaching the train's carts before eavesdropping on Brewster's conversation with the Templar occultist Lucy Thorne, who threatened him to achieve results soon. As she infiltrated Brewster's laboratory, Evie rescued Robert Topping, who had been captured by the Templars after being mistaken for a spy, and found Brewster attempting to electrify the Apple to activate it.[13]

Evie assassinated Brewster, who with his dying words revealed that Thorne had found another Piece of Eden in London. However, at that moment, the Apple became unstable and exploded due to the overflow of electricity. Evie escaped the laboratory's destruction and returned to Jacob and George to report her mission's success. When both siblings expressed a desire to journey to London and liberate the city from Templar control, George scolded them, claiming that it was not Ethan's wish for them. After George left, however, the twins decided to disobey his orders. Adamant to continue her father's legacy, Evie accompanied Jacob in hitching a train ride to London.[13]

Jacob and Evie meeting with Henry in his shop

Arriving in Whitechapel, Evie and Jacob decided to seek out the leader, and sole remaining Assassin in London, Henry Green. Running into Henry while exploring Whitechapel, the Assassin apprised them of the Templar control over London before Jacob proposed the formation of a gang called the Rooks to counter the Templar-backed Blighters. Evie disagreed with her brother's plan, believing that finding the Piece of Eden Brewster had warned her about was a matter of more urgency.[14]

While making their way to Henry's curiosity shop, the three Assassins bumped into Charles Dickens, who invited them for a talk sometime, and were attacked by a group of Blighters. Evie and Jacob distracted the Blighters to allow Henry to return to his shop, where the twins joined him shortly after.[14]

At Henry's suggestion, the twins later met one of his contacts, Sergeant Frederick Abberline of the Metropolitan Police Service, who gave them a list of Blighters for them to kidnap and bring back to him in order to arrest them.[15] They also met Henry's young ally, Clara O'Dea, who agreed to provide them with information on Templar operations in exchange for rescuing abused children from local factories.[16] After eliminating the remaining Blighters in Whitechapel, their leader, Rexford Kaylock, challenged the Assassins to a fight for control of the borough, which the Fryes ultimately won, allowing them to establish the Rooks.[17]

Having earned ownership of Kaylock's personal train, Evie and Jacob decided to utilize it as their hideout and gained a new ally in Agnes MacBean, who provided her financial services.[17] They subsequently traveled to Southwark to meet the inventor Alexander Graham Bell, another ally of Henry's, who offered to fix the broken rope launcher they had acquired from Kaylock and attach it to their Hidden Blade gauntlets. In return, Evie assisted Bell in setting up a free telegraph line for companies competing against Crawford Starrick to use, by installing new fuses in the Clock Tower of the Palace of Westminster.[18]

During the carriage ride to the palace, Evie spoke with Bell about his inventions and suggested shortening the name "phonetic telegraph" to "telephone". After successfully carrying out her task, Evie returned to Bell, who showed her the smoke bombs he had created and provided her with the formula so that the Assassins could craft the bombs themselves. Evie then headed to a Blighter stronghold to loot metal components to allow her to upgrade her equipment, before returning to Bell's laboratory, where the inventor provided Jacob with a second rope launcher.[18]

Returning to the train hideout, Evie and Jacob were greeted by Ned Wynert, an American transgender entrepreneur, who gave them his business card. The Assassins then planned their next move, with Jacob determined to strengthen the Rooks and eliminate Starrick's allies while Evie and Henry focused on locating the Piece of Eden.[18]

Search for the Shroud of Eden[]

Jacob: "Ah, another exciting night home for Evie Frye."
Evie: "Just on my way out, actually. I've found the Piece of Eden."
Jacob: "What's this one going to do, hm? Heal the sick? Deflect bullets? Control the populace?"
Evie: "They're dangerous objects, Jacob, especially in Templar hands."

The Crate Escape 14

Evie finding Edward Kenway's journal

Seeing Jacob's plan to destroy the Templars as a brash and reckless idea, the siblings were in disagreement. Nevertheless, they decided to work together to recover an artifact from one of Lucy Thorne's shipments. As Jacob eliminated the guards, Evie searched the chest and found a book with the Assassin insignia on the cover. Unfortunately, more Blighters arrived, forcing the twins to escape with the carriage; Jacob took the reins while Evie fired on their pursuers. Ultimately, the twins were forced to abandon the carriage and its cargo, though Evie managed to keep the Assassin book.[19]

Later, Evie and Jacob visited Bell, who upgraded their bracers with a dart mechanism capable of firing hallucinogenic darts. The twins then provided assistance to the inventor by recovering cable lines stolen by the Blighters at the College Wharf harbor. In the process, they discovered that the Blighters were smuggling poison for Starrick and informed Bell of their findings.[20]

After returning to the train hideout, Evie and Henry studied the book the former had recovered from Thorne and discovered that it was a journal of the late Assassin Edward Kenway. Learning that Edward had found a Shroud of Eden during his travels, which he hid away, Evie used her Eagle Vision to search for clues and found a hidden map leading to Edward's former mansion. She then decided to investigate this lead, convincing Henry to accompany her.[21]

ACS Playing It by Ear 5

Evie and Henry inside the Kenway Mansion

At the mansion, Evie and Henry were forced to sneak past Thorne and the Blighters who had occupied the residence while they scrutinized the Kenways' memorabilia for clues. In the piano room, Evie solved a puzzle involving the piano's keys, which opened a secret hatch in the floor. The Assassins managed to recover several documents and a golden disc before the Templars discovered the hatch, forcing Evie and Henry to escape through the tunnels below the mansion.[21]

Continuing their fight against Starrick and his control of the press, Evie and Jacob returned to Bell's laboratory, where the latter told them of Starrick's efforts of bribery to coax the inventor to his side. Aware of the Blighters' plans to attack him, he invented voltaic bombs which could stun assailants and offered them to the twins along with insulators to protect them from harm. At that moment, the infuriated Blighters arrived; the Assassins took this as an opportunity to test the bombs and incapacitate the Blighters while Bell distracted them.[22]

Evie and Jacob further aided the inventor by driving him to the telegraph station, where they sought to prevent Starrick from spreading false information throughout London and show people the truth about his operations. While the twins incapacitated the guards using their newly acquired weapon, Bell destroyed Starrick's transmitters. Afterwards, the trio returned to Bell's laboratory to celebrate their victory, and the inventor thanked the Assassins for their help and for inspiring in him the courage to protect himself against future threats.[22]

Later, Evie visited the Lambeth Asylum after Jacob's assassination of Dr. John Elliotson, where she saw Clara O'Dea, who had come to acquire medicine for the sick children in her care. Clara fainted in Evie's arms moments later, though fortunately Florence Nightingale opened the door to the hospital and told the Assassin to bring Clara inside so that she could treat her. The nurse then tasked Evie to recover supplies for a cure, which she did, allowing Nightingale to distribute the medicine throughout the borough and save numerous lives, including Clara's.[23]

Facing Lucy Thorne[]

Thorne: "So, you have murdered me after all. But what good will that do you? The Shroud isn't here."
Evie: "You sought a tool of healing in order to extend your own power!"
Thorne: "Not mine, ours. You are so short-sighted. You'd hoard power and never use it, when we would better the condition of humanity. I hope you never find the Shroud. You have no idea what it truly can do."
—Evie and Thorne during the latter's final moments, 1868.[src]-[m]

Evie continued her search for the Shroud of Eden, with the documents recovered from the Kenway Mansion leading her to the Monument to the Great Fire of London. After a brief conversation with Jacob, who mocked her about her growing feelings for Henry, her brother left and Evie climbed to the top of the Monument, inserting the disc taken from the Kenway Mansion, which revealed an image of St. Paul's Cathedral.[24]

ACS A Room with a View 13

Thorne hanging on Evie's Isu necklace

Traveling there next, Evie solved a gear puzzle on the cathedral's rooftop, opening a hatch to a secret room inside the cathedral's dome. After retrieving an Isu necklace, which she deduced to be the key to the Shroud's vault, Evie was confronted by Lucy Thorne, who had followed her. The Assassin and Templar subsequently dueled each other and their fight came to an end when Thorne crashed through a nearby window while holding onto Evie's Isu necklace. The Assassin promptly cut the necklace, causing Thorne to fall, but to her dismay, the Templar survived and escaped with the necklace.[24]

Sometime after Jacob's assassination of Pearl Attaway and the shutting down of her omnibus company, Evie visited Southwark, finding Edward Bayley being harassed by the Blighters, who sought to force him to build omnibuses for them. She chased the Blighters on a carriage as she defended Bayley. The pair then rode to Attaway's former omnibus factory to steal the deed and return it to Bayley, safeguarding the businessman's family from the Templars.[25]

Grateful to his savior, Bayley introduced Evie to the founders of the London General Omnibus Company, notifying her of their endeavor to supply the needed omnibuses for the city.[25] Realizing that her brother was causing more problems for London's citizens with his assassinations, Evie warned Jacob about the consequences of his actions and decided to keep an eye on him.[26]

Later, Evie and Henry researched the Isu necklace stolen by Thorne, with Henry commenting that it matched a casket owned by Queen Victoria, which was kept in the Tower of London. Evie infiltrated the fortress and witnessed the disguised Blighters replacing the guards and searching for the casket. Feigning capture with the aid of one of the real guards, Evie got close enough to Thorne to assassinate her. She then tried to interrogate the Templar for the Shroud's location, but Thorne merely mocked the Assassins for hoarding the Pieces of Eden rather than using them before passing away.[27]

As the guards regained control of the Tower, Evie grabbed the Isu necklace from Thorne's body and used the confusion to escape on a riverboat.[27] During the journey back to the train hideout, Evie reflected on Thorne's words about the Shroud granting the Templars immortality and being more than just an instrument of healing. Recalling she had once read something similar in one of her father's books, Evie decided to write to George Westhouse, requesting that he find the book.[28]

Evie later met with Frederick Abberline, learning from the sergeant that Jacob's actions had again caused major turmoil among the citizens of London. She was subsequently forced to recover missing currency printing plates, which had been stolen from the Bank of England following Jacob's assassination of Philip Twopenny. Tailing the head counterfeiter's carriage, Evie located the plates and recovered them, while also destroying all the counterfeit notes created using the plates, thus preventing a major economic crisis.[29]

Finding the Shroud[]

Henry: "I'm sorry my capture has undone your plans."
Evie: "You'd be safer on the train."
Henry: "Even if you find the vault, you can't just walk into Buckingham Palace alone."

Continuing their search for the Shroud, Evie and Henry congregated with Maharaja Duleep Singh, Henry's great-uncle, who had a lead on the location of the Shroud's vault under Buckingham Palace. After Singh informed them that the blueprints for the palace had been stolen by the Templars, Henry provided a distraction while Evie searched for the plans. Unable to find the documents, Evie kidnapped and interrogated a Templar guard, only to learn that Henry had been captured.[30]

Abandoning her mission, Evie decided to rescue Henry instead. Some of Clara O'Dea's urchins had witnessed his kidnapping and told Evie to follow the cart's wobbly tracks. After interviewing several witnesses to unveil Henry's location, she eventually found the Assassin being held captive in the tunnels underneath a church and rescued him. Escaping the sewers, Evie advised Henry to let Florence Nightingale treat his head injury while she contacted Duleep Singh again.[30]

Later, Evie reflected on her choice to save Henry rather than find the stolen plans and, concluding she could not allow her feelings to get in the way of the mission again, ended their partnership.[26] During this time, Evie and Jacob led the Rooks to victory in their gang war against the Blighters, taking control of all of London's boroughs after eliminating the Blighters' Templar leaders: Bloody Nora,[31] Lilla Graves,[32] Victor Lynch,[33] Octavia Plumb,[34] Cletus Strain,[35] and Edith Swinebourne.[36]

With all of Starrick's allies eliminated by Jacob, Evie confronted her brother on his return to the train hideout and scolded him for the problems he had caused, which she had to fix. She then mentioned their father, much to Jacob's irritation, and the twins argued. Henry calmed them down and told them about a ball to be held at Buckingham Palace, where Starrick was planning to steal the Shroud and eliminate Britain's heads of church and state.[5]

Seeing this as an opportunity to recover the Piece of Eden, Evie and Jacob joined forces in spite of their grievances with one another, and invited Benjamin and Mary Anne Disraeli, the prime minister and his wife, to their hideout. There, they expressed their need to enter the ball and offered to steal the invitations of Catherine and William Gladstone, much to the Disraelis' glad approval. Jacob subsequently went to retrieve the invitations while Evie visited Duleep Singh for a second set of the palace's plans.[5]

In exchange for the information, the Maharaja enlisted Evie's help with a matter of urgency: acquiring a royal carriage to drive politicians to their destinations while Singh attempted to recruit them to his cause. The Assassin complied and, during the ride, Singh revealed that Henry had told him about Evie's father and that he believed the loss of his wife might have led Ethan to say things he did not truly mean just to protect his loved ones. Upon the job's completion, Singh upheld his promise and told Evie the plans' location inside Buckingham Palace.[37]

Using the Gladstones' invitations and carriage, Evie and Jacob successfully infiltrated the ball before splitting up. Evie went to retrieve the palace's blueprints and, due to the restrictions of her dress, had to kidnap a Royal Guard to gain access to the white drawing-room where the plans were kept. On her way back to the party, she bumped into Mary Anne Disraeli who introduced her to Queen Victoria, who knew of their dealings with the Gladstones and told Evie to enjoy the ball and the cake.[38]

Politely excusing herself, the Assassin continued making her way towards the vault only to be grabbed by Crawford Starrick. The Grand Master offered her a dance and, after explaining his philosophy that people would never change and that only the Templars could advance civilization, revealed his plan to her. Pointing out to snipers he had placed on the palace's rooftop, Starrick claimed that, as soon as the dance ended, his men would kill Evie and the other guests. Fortunately, Jacob came to her rescue and eliminated the snpiers.[38]

As their dance came to an end, Evie kneed Starrick in the groin, though the Grand Master managed to steal her Isu necklace and proceeded to make his way to the Shroud's vault. After telling Jacob to go after Starrick, Evie went to change her clothes and joined her brother inside the vault, saving him from Starrick, who had donned the Shroud. The Grand Master grabbed Evie by the throat but Jacob stopped him and the twins exchanged more blows with Starrick until they both became trapped.[38]

Fortunately, Henry arrived, throwing a knife at Starrick, though he was knocked off his feet by the Grand Master. Evie and Jacob continued the fight and eventually managed to separate Starrick from the Shroud and assassinate him. With the Templar threat gone, the twins apologized for their respective mistakes; Jacob admitted that his reckless actions had brought chaos to London while Evie in turn apologized for treating him not too differently from their father, claiming that Ethan had underestimated Jacob's potential as an Assassin.[38]

As the siblings reconciled and decided to resume their partnership, Jacob returned the Shroud to its casing while Evie tended to the injured Henry. After her meaningful conversation with Duleep Singh, Evie had come to the conclusion that her father had been mistaken about certain aspects of his teachings and so she decided to embrace her feelings for Henry, sharing a kiss with him.[38]

Later, the three Assassins met with Queen Victoria, who had been informed of their deeds by Frederick Abberline. Grateful to her saviors, the Queen knighted them into her Order of the Sacred Garter and promised to call upon them for more work in the future. Evie and Jacob then raced off to their hideout, leaving Henry behind.[38]

At some point during their stay in London, Evie and Jacob met Charles Dickens in a tavern. After formally introducing themselves, Dickens asked the twins about their belief in the supernatural; while Jacob was skeptical, Evie responded in the affirmative, surprising her brother. Dickens then invited them to join his Ghost Club, which aimed to investigate supernatural occurrences around London and find a logical explanation for them. Evie readily accepted and convinced Jacob to do the same.[39]

The twins subsequently went to investigate their first case, that of Spring-heeled Jack. Searching around Lambeth, Evie and Jacob witnessed Jack attacking several civilians and chased him to his hideout, discovering that the supposed supernatural entity was just a deranged cultist. They then proceeded to kill him and his followers.[39]

The Frye twins later investigated a string of mysterious robberies, which they discovered were being committed by Enzio Capelli, a showman who hypnotized civilians into stealing for him. However, the siblings fell prey to Capelli's tricks themselves and were arrested for theft, but fortunately Dickens was able to pull a few strings to have them released.[40] Evie and Jacob eventually managed to track down Capelli again and captured him, delivering him to the police.[41]

The twins also investigated the supposed haunting of 50 Berkeley Square and learned that the house's owner, James Jasper, was to blame, having gone insane after murdering his nephew. As Jasper sought to keep people away from his home, he attacked Evie and Jacob, forcing them to kill him in self-defense.[42] In a junkyard, the siblings and Dickens investigated a broken carriage rumored to be haunted, but during the search, the Assassins suddenly began to feel tired and fell asleep. They then experienced a peculiar dream in which they prevented the kidnapping of a woman named Elizabeth, leaving them puzzled about the nature of the encounter.[43]

Evie and Jacob's final case involved the return of Spring-heeled Jack, whom they chased around Lambeth, but the demon was able to escape from them by seemingly teleporting and performing a Leap of Faith. Following this, the twins returned to Dickens, who thanked them for increasing the Ghost Club's reputation and proposed a toast to celebrate their success.[44]

Sometime following his assassination of John Elliotson, Jacob introduced his sister to Charles Darwin, whereupon the scientist enlisted the Assassins' help with escorting his colleague Dr. Schwartz, who was to deliver an important fossil. Evie and Jacob went to pick up Schwartz from the Charing Cross station, only to discover that he was an impostor intent on killing Darwin. The Assassins subsequently eliminated the impostor and recovered the fossil, delivering it to Darwin.[45]

Later, Darwin informed the twins of a toxic plant in one of Westminster's parks that was making people delirious, and asked them to look into the matter. Their investigation revealed the source of the hallucinogenic pollen to be a flower carriage belonging to the Templars, which they proceeded to hijack. After cryptically telling Darwin about the nature of their conflict with the Templars, Evie and Jacob destroyed the carriage using explosives.[46]

When they met with Darwin again, the scientist asked Evie and Jacob to fetch him a newspaper, only for the Assassins to witness the vendor being attacked by a thug after refusing to display a leaflet criticizing Darwin's work. Following a lengthy chase, the twins caught up to the thug and saved him from an oncoming train. The man then informed them about a defamation campaign against Darwin,[47] prompting Evie and Jacob to tear down several caricature posters of the scientist hanged by the Blighters around the city.[48]

A Struggle for Existence 19

After the Assassins destroyed the printing shop behind the propaganda campaign,[48] the Templars retaliated by kidnapping Darwin. Informed by Florence Nightingale of the incident, Evie and Jacob captured the corrupt policeman who had "arrested" Darwin and brought him to Nightingale, who interrogated him for Darwin's whereabouts. The twins subsequently rescued the scientist from the Templar base where he was being held captive, whereupon Darwin thanked them for their help and left with Nightingale to recover from his injuries.[49]

Sometime later, Evie and Jacob helped Darwin recover a rare orchid stolen by the Blighters,[50] and agreed to act as the escorts to John Hammon, a mutual friend of Darwin and Charles Dickens. After protecting him from a group of Blighters who attempted to rob him, Hammon devised a plan to test the sincerity of his fiancée, Bella Wilton, and enlisted the Assassins' help to fake his death.[51]

After assessing Bella's character, Hammon decided that he wanted to marry her and again asked for Evie and Jacob's help, this time to play the role of ruffians who would kidnap Bella, allowing Hammon to "rescue" her. The plan was successful and, after Hammon defeated Evie and Jacob in a staged fight and departed with Bella, the twins went to report the entire ordeal to Darwin and Dickens, much to their amusement.[52]

During their time in London, Evie and Jacob also made the acquaintance of Karl Marx. Aware of their efforts in aiding the city's populace, Marx congratulated them for their work but noted that they had not focused enough on the working class, whom he felt really needed their help. In response, Evie readily accepted to assist Marx in his endeavors while Jacob did so more hesitantly.[53]

Their first mission for Marx involved the twins taking out spies of the London police, to allow Marx to discreetly contact his allies and give them the time and place of their next meeting. After discovering that one of his allies, Simon, had betrayed him, Marx asked the Assassins to deliver the traitor to him, whereupon he scolded him and let him go.[53]

Later, Marx requested that Evie and Jacob infiltrate a factory he suspected of abusing its workforce, in order to acquire evidence against it. After setting several bales of cotton on fire, the Assassins were able to slip into the factory's office in the resulting confusion and steal the documents Marx required.[54] Following this, Marx asked the twins to prevent his friend Frank Morris from blowing up the Palace of Westminster with explosives stolen from the Templars. Evie and Jacob were able to protect Morris from the vengeful Templars, but failed to prevent them from stealing back the explosives shipment.[55]

There, they detonated most of the explosives to prevent the Templars from using them, but Morris, who had followed the carriage, attempted to steal some for himself, resulting in his death when a Templar shot the explosives in his hands.[56]

During a rally where Marx gave a speech on reforms, Evie and Jacob sought to keep the event peaceful by removing suspicious individuals who would attempt to stir up violence. Despite their efforts, the rally nonetheless descended into violence when a group of Blighters appeared and tried to kill Marx, though they were foiled by the twins.[57]

In the aftermath, Marx, grateful for Evie and Jacob's services, asked them to join the Worker's Party. Both siblings declined, Jacob claiming he was not interested in politics and Evie referencing other responsibilities. The philosopher then suggested he give them honorary memberships instead, but the pair again refused, with Jacob pointing out that Marx did not give up easily. To this, Marx good-naturedly replied that they appeared to have that in common, following which he bid the twins goodbye.[57]

Foiling the Templar terrorists[]

The Templar ship smuggling explosives

After saving Queen Victoria from Starrick's assassination plot, Evie and Jacobe met the Queen at Buckingham Palace, where she informed them of an upstart Templar faction plotting to seize control of London. The twins agreed to investigate this plot and met with Alfred Fleming, the head of the Queen's secret service, who told them about a Templar ship attempting to smuggle explosives into the city. With the help of the Rooks, Evie and Jacob organized an ambush at the harbor, eliminated the Templars and captured their leader while Fleming secured the explosives.[58]

When Fleming proved unsuccessful in interrogating the Templar leader, Queen Victoria sent Evie and Jacob to help. After beating the Templar, he confessed that his accomplices had rigged a train with explosives, which they planned to detonate and kill everyone aboard. Rushing to the train's location, the Assassins managed to board it and detach the locomotive from the rest of the train, allowing the bomb to detonate without harming any civilians.[59]

Later, the Templar leader managed to escape custody and went to meet with his remaining accomplices. Evie and Jacob followed him and hijacked a carriage containing explosives, but the Templars ignited the dynamite, forcing the twins to drive the carriage to a safe area before it exploded.[60] Shortly after, the Templars infiltrated the Palace of Westminster, placing explosives and taking Prime Minister Disraeli hostage. The Assassins intervened, saving Disraeli and disarming the bombs.[61]

Queen Victoria thanking the twins for their services

With the Templar threat foiled, Queen Victoria met Evie and Jacob to personally thank them for their services and expressed her hope that they would continue to assist her in strengthening the British Empire. However, the twins politely stated that their Creed forbade them from aiding in the Empire's expansion, with Evie suggesting that the Queen put an end to her imperialist beliefs. Victoria understood and respected their position, and provided them with rewards for their deeds before bidding them farewell.[61]

When Agnes MacBean began to be followed by a strange man while doing her rounds, Evie offered to help by tailing her stalker. In the process, she was forced to protect Agnes from several Blighters who attempted to kill her after the stalker inadvertently revealed her affiliation with the Rooks. Eventually cornering the stalker, Evie and Agnes interrogated him and learned that his name was Nigel Bumble and that he wished to join the Rooks. Agnes humored him, taking him on as a cleaner of the train hideout, but the young man was ecstatic nonetheless.[62]

Shortly after joining the Rooks, Nigel got into trouble when he went out to drink with some fellow gang members and became mixed up in the murder of a Blighter, resulting in his arrest. At Agnes' request, Evie came to Nigel's rescue and disposed of all the incriminating evidence, including the body of the murdered Blighter. Consequently, the police were forced to release Nigel from custody, much to the arresting sergeant's humiliation.[63]

Later, the train's driver asked for Evie's help after his apprentice, Bob, installed a wrong part of the locomotive. Evie went to buy the necessary part from a merchant, but while doing so, she was approached by Bob, who revealed that the train's engine had caught fire, damaging the brakes and preventing the train from stopping. The Assassin rushed back to the train and helped the driver extinguish the flames and repair the brakes, preventing a potential catastrophe.[64]

New allies and discoveries[]

At some point, Evie and Jacob encountered Robert Topping, the bookie whom Evie had met while infiltrating David Brewster's laboratory in Croydon, though she pretended not to recognize him. Topping told the twins about his role in organizing underground prize-fighting and street racing rings and invited them to partake in some of the events. After the Assassins won a number of fights and races across London, Topping congratulated them and again asked Evie if she did not remember him from "that night at the laboratory." Jacob proceeded to mock his sister about the implications, though she quickly assured him that it was not what he thought.[65]

The twins also met Ned Wynert at Waterloo station, where the businessman informed them of Blighter cargo shipments throughout London. Evie and Jacob proceeded to hijack a number of these shipments, sabotaging the Blighters' operations and benefitting Ned's in the process. As their ties strengthened, Ned gifted the Assassins various precious materials and schematics for weaponry to show his gratitude.[65]

While exploring the City of London, Evie and Jacob stumbled upon an underground vault built by Michel Reuge. While Evie instantly recognized the vault from her studies, Jacob had no idea who Michel Reuge was, prompting his sister to explain that Reuge was an Assassin who had allegedly found a treasure near Bath and hid it away after it drove him insane.[65]

The twins proceeded to search for the music boxes scattered by Reuge across London, which contained the keys to his vault. After finding all the keys, Evie and Jacob unlocked the vault, discovering Reuge's treasure to be the Aegis, a set of advanced armor supposedly worn by Minerva. Evie claimed the Aegis for herself while Jacob jokingly asked if there was a second suit hidden behind it, as the Aegis was too tight for him, to which Evie responded that he'd "look a right tit in it".[65]

The Dreadful Crimes[]

Evie: "I suppose this means our detective days are over. But what about you Artie?"

While exploring Whitechapel, Evie and Jacob happened upon a murder scene and met Henry Raymond, a penny dreadful journalist, and his follower, Arthur "Artie" Conan Doyle. At their suggestion, the Assassins decided to investigate the crime scene and were able to identify the killer: a worker by the name of Tom Coulton, who had murdered his foreman, John Wilkins, and attempted to frame a child worker named Dooley for the crime.[66]

Following this successful investigation, the Frye twins agreed to investigate more murders around the city, allowing Raymond to adapt them into penny dreadfuls. Together, Evie and Jacob were able to solve the killing of a young woman by her lover with a split personality;[67] the shooting of a retired colonel;[68] the disappearance of a police detective;[69] the apparent double death of a renowned professor;[70] the asphyxiation of a music critic;[71] the murder of a hated businessman;[72] the killing of a wealthy industrialist during a train ride;[73] and the murder of a spiritualist by one of his clients.[74]

As their reputation as detectives increased, Evie and Jacob were eventually summoned by Queen Victoria to Buckingham Palace to solve the apparent murder of one of her guards. At the same time, Artie conducted his own investigation, believing all the crimes solved by the Frye twins to be related. Following the clues left behind by Artie, Evie and Jacob discovered that Raymond was really a criminal mastermind plotting to bomb the palace, and proceeded to have it evacuated.[75]

However, upon closer analysis of all the clues, the Assassins realized that the bomb threat was fake and a distraction for Raymond, who had posed as the murdered guard, to steal the Scepter of the Dove. As Raymond took Artie hostage on the Palace's rooftop, one of the Frye siblings confronted him while the other assassinated him from behind, saving Artie. Afterwards, Jacob suggested that Artie use everything he had learned to start writing crime novels, with Evie adding that he should use his full name.[75]

Aiding Duleep Singh[]

"The Assassin way is not my way, as helpful as you have been. This Empire, this land, my people... The problem is so much bigger than death. I know I must devote my life to this cause, to put India, my home, back onto the map, return it to its people. It's a long and gruelling journey, but it is something I must do. Even if it takes me to my own death."

ACS A Good Shot 3

Evie and Jacob meeting with Duleep Singh

During a visit to Buckingham Palace, Evie and Jacob witnessed a conversation between Henry and Duleep Singh. As Henry was unable to convince his great-uncle to try and reclaim his birthright as Maharaja, he turned to the twins for help. At Singh's request, Evie and Jacob engaged in a shooting competition against the Maharaja, but during the contest, an unknown shot was fired, nearly hitting Singh.[76]

After looking around for clues, the Assassins located and eliminated the shooter, finding a Templar ring in his pocket, as well as a clothing patch of the British Indies Company (B.I.C.). Concluding that the Templars and the Company were working together to try and eliminate Singh, the twins reported their findings to Henry, who told them to meet him back at his shop.[76] There, the Assassins decided that, in order to convince Singh to take action, they would intercept a Templar convoy carrying all of the Maharaja's correspondence to his mother, which the B.I.C. had intercepted.[77]

With Henry and the Rooks' help, Evie and Jacob ambushed the convoy and recovered part of the confiscated letters. The twins then headed to a train carrying the remaining letters and managed to retrieve them, before returning to Henry's shop, where they found the Assassin engaged in conversation with Singh. After presenting the letters to the Maharaja, he realized the B.I.C.'s deception and decided to fight back against the company with the Assassins' help.[77]

Singh's first course of action was to recover stolen Punjabi gold and, in order to learn its location, he enlisted Evie's help to find a B.I.C. accountant. After looking for him in a pub, the pair learned that the Templars had taken the accountant to the Bank of England and proceeded to rescue him. As the accountant had been injured by the Templars, Evie carried him out of the bank before Singh took him to the hospital.[78]

After learning the gold's location, Evie, Jacob and Singh infiltrated the warehouse where it was being held and retrieved it, before boarding a carriage and escaping from the Templars pursuing them.[79] Following this, Singh decided to send the gold back to his homeland via ship, and Evie and Jacob protected the ship and its cargo as they came under attack from the Templars.[80]

Later, Henry came up with a plan to further sabotage the B.I.C. and asked the twins and Singh to meet him at the Southwark train station. However, just prior to their arrival, the Assassins' train hideout came under attack by the Templars, forcing the group to defend it. During the fight, the Templars managed to steal the train, but Evie and Jacob eventually reclaimed control of it.[81]

Subsequently, Singh devised a plan to steal the Koh-i-Noor diamond, which Jacob learned was being kept at the Tower of London.[82] While Jacob and Singh attended a gala held at the Tower to retrieve the diamond, Evie made her way to the rooftop and eliminated the Templar guards before meeting with her brother to receive the Koh-i-Noor. Jacob also informed Evie of the Templars' plan to frame Singh for the diamond's theft, which he had foiled, before the twins parted ways.[83]

Returning to Henry's shop, the Assassin examined the Koh-i-Noor and shattered it with a hammer, revealing that the diamond the Frye twins had stolen was a replica. He then explained that the real Koh-i-Noor had never left India,[83] his father Arbaaz having made sure of it,[84] and reconciled with Singh as the two decided to work together to secure India's future.[83] Following this, Henry left to investigate an abandoned foundry that had been recently taken over by the B.I.C. and reported his findings to Evie and Jacob.[85]

As the twins decided to investigate the foundry themselves, they found that it was being used by the B.I.C. and the Templars to produce sleeping gas, which they planned to ship to India. The Assassins subsequently destroyed the shipment and were confronted by Brinley Ellsworth, a B.I.C. official and childhood friend of Singh, who revealed that he was responsible for all the recent attacks against the Maharaja. As Ellsworth made his escape, Evie and Jacob returned to the train hideout to report their findings to Henry and Singh.[85]

Deciding to confront his former friend, Singh arranged a meeting with him at the Lambeth Cemetery, during which Evie eliminated the Templar guards positioned around the cemetery to assassinate the Maharaja. When Ellsworth attempted to shoot Singh himself, Evie intervened and disarmed the Templar, but spared his life at the request of the Maharaja, who believed that killing Ellsworth would make them no better than the B.I.C. Following this, Singh met with Evie and Jacob back at the train hideout, where he thanked them for their help and bid them farewell, deciding to continue his quest to reclaim his birthright alone.[86]

Reunion with Pierrette[]

In 1869, Evie received a letter from her friend Pierrette Arnaud regarding the exhumation of the late Elizabeth Siddal.[87] She subsequently greeted Pierrette upon her arrival in London and drove her to Dante Gabriel Rossetti's home in Chelsea. Later, Evie was invited to a game of whist at Anne Blunt's house, which was secretly a pretext to interrogate Charles Augustus Howell, the man who had convinced Rossetti to dig up his late wife.[88]

During the game night, the three women held Howell at gunpoint and ordered him to answer their questions. Howell admitted to being convinced by his late friend John Elliotson to dig up Sidall's grave to retrieve two notebooks, one of poetry and one containing the late Ada Lovelace's notes. However, a female apparition seemingly manifested before him and took Ada's notes from them. Realizing the Templars took Ada's notes, Pierrette and Evie dismissed Howell but not before Pierrette warned him not to tell anyone about their conversation.[89]

Relocating to India[]

"The last time Henry, my brother and I were together was in India... fifteen years ago. When the photograph was taken, we stood facing a temple of Kali... And that's one of the boys Jacob brought to train with the Brotherhood. What did we call him?... 'Jack the lad'!—reckless and roguish, much like my brother..."
―Evie recalling Jacob and his apprentices' visit to India, 1888.[src]-[m]

After liberating London from the Templars' control, Evie and Jacob would eventually go their separate ways, as Evie married Henry and moved with him to India, joining the local Brotherhood, while Jacob remained in London to continue leading the Rooks and rebuild the Assassins' presence. Despite her absence, the city enjoyed a period of relative peace and stability for twenty years.[90]

Henry and Evie saving Greyling

Evie and Henry saving Tommy Greyling

In 1872, while Evie and Henry were in London, they were contacted by Frederick Abberline, who requested their assistance in foiling the plans of Alice, an American Templar sent to steal pages of the Voynich manuscript from the British Museum. When Alice was cornered by Pinkerton agent Tommy Greyling and escaped, causing Greyling to nearly fall to his death in the process, Evie and Henry rescued the agent.[91]

The following day, the group met in the Scotland Yard morgue, where Abberline revealed that Alice had acted as bait to lure them away from the museum while her accomplices searched for the manuscript pages. They studied the mud prints of Constable Niall Hobday, a museum guard killed by the Templars, and tracked their findings to a slaughterhouse.[92]

There, the group found an unconscious Edward Feather, the Head Clerk of Acquisitions at the museum, and were confronted by Alice and her Blighter henchmen. A firefight ensued which ended with the Assassins and their allies victorious, despite Greyling being injured in the process.[92]

Alice, however, had managed to obtain the information she sought from Feather and fled to the museum. The group followed her there, discovering the dead watchmen left in her tracks. They proceeded to the Acquisition Department, where they found Alice and the Blighters rummaging through the cabinets, triggering another firefight. The Templar soon found the documents she wanted and attempted to flee, but Evie and Greyling confronted her.[93]

Faking surrender, Alice threw a smoke bomb, allowing her to escape again. Evie stayed behind to prevent the fire caused by the bomb from spreading while Greyling chased after Alice on a carriage.[93] Ultimately, the agent was able to corner Alice on a ship heading to America, but the Templar chose to commit suicide by jumping into the ocean to avoid capture, also destroying the manuscript pages in the process.[94]

Around 1873, Evie and Henry welcomed Jacob and several of his British initiates, including a young boy named Jack, when they arrived in India to learn the fear tactics of the Indian Brotherhood.[95]

Pursuing Jack the Ripper[]

In 1888, Evie was summoned by Jacob back to London in the wake of the Whitechapel murders. After returning to the city, she converged with Inspector Frederick Abberline, who brought her up to speed with the serial killer Jack the Ripper and informed her that Jacob was nowhere to be found. She then followed the Inspector to the murder scene of the Ripper's first victim, Mary Ann Nichols. Abberline informed her that the woman murdered was not the Mary Ann Nichols he knew and, upon closer inspection, Evie found an Assassin ring tossed away and deduced that the victim was an undercover Assassin.[96]

ACS Autumn of Terror 2

Having been tipped off by Abberline, Evie went to investigate Jacob's Whitechapel lodgings, in the hopes of discovering a clue as to where the Ripper or her brother could be. Searching the room, he found one of the Ripper's letters, a photograph of her, Jacob, Henry and an initiate nicknamed "Jack the Lad" in India, and a letter to her hidden under a statuette of the goddess Kali.[95]

After reading Jacob's letter, Evie sought out the prostitute Nellie, a friend of her brother's, who had been escorted to the Kenway Mansion where Lady Olwyn Owers was giving a speech. She spoke with Nellie and learned that killing Lady Owers was necessary to find Jacob. Evie then chased a carriage thought to have been occupied by Lady Owers, and upon hijacking it, realized Nellie was inside. Nellie then told Evie that Lady Owers had fled to her manor northwest of London.[95]

Evie infiltrated the manor and assassinated Lady Owers, procuring a photograph with scratched out individuals save for Arthur Weaversbrook. Evie concluded that Weaversbrook was to be kidnapped and returned to London to save him.[97]

ACS JTR - Letters of Intent 06

Evie questioning Weaversbrook

Meeting with Abberline, the Assassin learned that she had been framed for a massacre at Owers Manor that had taken place shortly after her departure. She then found and intercepted a tense Weaversbrook near St. Paul's, who informed her that the Ripper had his son and led her to his last known location near the docks. After rescuing Weaversbrook's son, Evie learned that Jack was keeping others hostage in old hulk prison ships and an abandoned garrison in Deptford.[98]

Traveling downriver to the Deptford docks, Evie questioned the hostages found on the prison ships, who told her they were being forced to write letters to their families with demands from the Ripper. She then decided to assassinate the chief warder John Billingsworth of the nearby garrison. After fatally wounding him, Billingsworth informed Evie of Jack's tutelage under Jacob. The Assassin then telephoned the Metropolitan Police Service, who informed her that Jack had struck again, and requested they send men to the docks to free the hostages.[99]

Soon after her return to the city, Evie rendezvoused with Abberline at the murder scene of Mary Kelly. Through further investigation, Evie was able to find a message left for her by Jack meant to lead her to the scenes of his first victims. At the murder scenes of Annie Chapman and Catherine Eddowes and Elizabeth Stride, Evie discovered their tossed Assassin rings and, at the latter scene, yet another message from Jack, which in turn led her to the scene of his mother's murder. There, she was caught off guard by an unexpected fear bomb, which induced hallucinations in her mind. Once the hallucinations wore off and discovering she had attacked innocent bystanders, Evie came to the conclusion that Jack was at the Lambeth Asylum.[100]

ACS Live by the Creed, Die by the Creed 9

With the asylum's inmates set free, Evie sneaked past the lunatics and made her way to the madhouse's lowest area. After finding a heavily wounded Jacob imprisoned in a cell, Evie went to the basement to confront Jack. Initially unable to face the rogue Assassin in direct combat, she used stealth and cunning to ambush Jack until she eventually took his dagger and, with a volley of cuts and stabs, brought an end to the Ripper's life and reign of terror.[101]

With Jack dead, Evie went back to her nearly unconscious brother and was met by Abberline, with reporters in tow. In order to protect the Brotherhood from backlash and discovery, Evie asked Abberline to keep Jack's death and identity a secret, not wanting the public to know of the Ripper's Assassin allegiance. The inspector acquiesced and went to drive away the journalists while Evie tended to her brother.[101]

Later life[]

In 1893, Evie became the great-aunt of Jacob's granddaughter, Lydia Frye. Responsibility for training the young Frye fell to Evie and her brother, as Lydia's parents were frequently engaged in missions for the Brotherhood abroad. At the outbreak of World War I in 1914, Evie and Jacob were removed to the safety of the countryside, while Lydia remained in London to protect the city from German spies and Templar agents.[102]

Legacy[]

"You need to synchronize Jacob and Evie's memories. Find something that puts us ahead of the enemy. Time is of the essence and lives are now clearly on the line. Good luck."
―Bishop to the Helix Initiate, 2015.[src]-[m]

Evie's actions, alongside Jacob's, led to the reconstruction of the British Assassins' presence in London after over a century of Templar control, as well as the severe weakening of the British Templars with the death of their Grand Master, Crawford Starrick.[65] Two decades later, she would also be responsible for solving the Whitechapel murders and ending Jack the Ripper's reign of terror over London, though the Ripper's identity or the circumstances of his death were never revealed to the public in order to maintain the Brotherhood's secrecy.[103]

At some point prior to 2015, a sample of Evie's DNA was retrieved by Abstergo Industries. The company had it analyzed to ascertain the location of the Shroud of Eden that Evie had come in contact with, as they intended to use it in the Phoenix Project. Around the same time, the Templar Isabelle Ardant included Evie's name on a list of known British Assassins. This list was later unveiled by the Assassins Rebecca Crane and Shaun Hastings when they infiltrated Ardant's office to plant a bug. After Rebecca and Shaun extracted Evie and her brother's DNA from Abstergo's archives, Bishop tasked an Assassin initiate with reliving the twins' memories in the Helix to find the Shroud before Abstergo.[104]

Around 2016, one of Evie's descendants, Jackie O'Connell, operated in London as a member of The Crew, a group of Assassins searching for a Piece of Eden.[1]

Evie and Jacob were both mentioned by the Assassin Layla Hassan, while she was in London in 2018. That same year, one of Layla's Animus modifications enabled an avatar based on Evie to become a lieutenant aboard Kassandra's ship, the Adrestia.[105]

Personality and traits[]

"For every mission, there is a right way and a wrong way. Barging thoughtlessly into combat is, more often than not, the latter."
―Evie Frye[106]

A true tactician and firm believer in the teachings of the Brotherhood, Evie took to the lessons of her father in a way that her brother did not, being more studious and interested in the lore and history of the Assassins. She also displayed a fascination with the Pieces of Eden, though she was aware that their power was too great for anyone to bear and thus they had to be kept out of Templar hands at all costs.[65]

ACS A Room With A View 15

Evie with her brother

Unlike her hot-headed brother, who preferred a direct approach in most situations, Evie relied on her intelligence and wit to accomplish her objectives. She planned her missions carefully and patiently, considering every angle to ensure the best chance of success, and would typically go for a stealth approach whenever possible. However, this sometimes worked against her, as it meant she was slow to act; a fact Jacob frequently criticized her for. In turn, Evie took issue with her brother's lack of forethought, as his reckless actions often led to new problems that she was forced to fix.[65]

While the twins' methods were frequently at odds, their motivations were the same, and the pair were at their most effective when they worked together, as they balanced each other out. Despite their frequent arguments, the two cared about each other and were willing to adopt the other's approach from time to time, as seen when Evie immediately accepted to help Karl Marx without further consideration, something that momentarily perplexed Jacob.[65]

Another point of difference between the twins was their relationship with their father, Ethan. While Jacob grew up resenting his father's lessons, Evie was very reverent of Ethan, often citing his teachings and using them to criticize Jacob's actions. However, Evie's opinion of her father changed after conversing with Duleep Singh and learning the truth about Ethan's grief following Cecily's death. Realizing that her father was not the perfect Assassin she had envisioned him as and was just as open to making mistakes as everyone else, Evie accepted that not all of his teachings might have correct and began to rely on her own thoughts and beliefs.[65]

Skills and equipment[]

"A true master of stealth can blend into any environment. If I remain still, my enemies will have no idea I'm about to strike."
―Evie Frye[106]

A Master Assassin proficient with the Hidden Blade, Evie was able to assassinate her targets skillfully and stealthily. She excelled at masking her presence, to such an extent that guards were unable to notice her as long as she remained still. A skilled freerunner, she was able to instantly scale the buildings of London as well as natural elements—including trees—with relative ease, and could transverse over and under various obstacles as well as moving terrains. Additionally, she proved to be a capable swimmer and was further skilled in pickpocketing and lockpicking.[65]

Evie using the rope launcher

As the carrying of weapons openly was forbidden at the time, Evie relied on an arsenal of hidden tools, much like her brother. She was capable of using dual Hidden Blades, a cane-sword, a kukri, pistols, brass knuckles, throwing knives, smoke bombs and voltaic bombs, which let loose a blast of electricity upon impact. Her Hidden Blade was also equipped with a rope launcher, allowing her to scale buildings quickly as well as create ziplines, and could fire hallucinogenic darts.[65]

While her brother specialized in brutal and straightforward weaponry like brass knuckles and firearms, Evie's stealthy nature led her to prefer more subtle tools like the cane-sword and throwing knives. She was especially proficient with the latter, being able to carry a larger amount and hit targets at a greater range than her brother.[65]

After moving to India, Evie learned the Indian Brotherhood's fear tactics, consisting of using fear-inducing hallucinogens with spikes and fear bombs as a method of non-lethally dealing with groups of enemies. She also began utilizing non-lethal tactics more frequently, often incapacitating opponents that weren't her targets instead of killing them. In addition, she adopted the use of Karas, bracelets that were used as arm protectors as well as knuckle-dusters.[103]

Evie also possessed the rare ability of Eagle Vision, and like her brother, she was capable of seeing through walls and tagging enemies with it.[65]

Henry confessing his feelings for Evie

During her time in London, Evie grew increasingly fond of her fellow Assassin Henry Green, with whom she frequently worked together in studying and locating the Pieces of Eden. Eager to have this partnership continue beyond research, she encouraged him to go out in the field with her, despite his own beliefs that he was not as well-suited to it. When Henry later disappeared during one of their missions, Evie abandoned the original objective to save him from his captors, a decision she later came to question.[65]

Realizing that her feelings for Henry affected her ability to judge situations objectively, which her father had warned her against during her youth and which Jacob had teasingly reminded her of, Evie broke off the partnership and went out into the field by herself once more. However, after speaking extensively with Duleep Singh, she came to question her strict adherence to her father's words.[65]

When Henry came to her and Jacob's rescue in their final confrontation with Crawford Starrick, Evie realized she wanted to be with him after all; once Starrick had been assassinated, she thanked Henry for saving them both, before kissing him. Sometime later, Henry proposed to her with a bouquet of flowers at the train hideout, to which she accepted.[65] After a few years, Evie and Henry decided to travel to India and learn the techniques of the local Brotherhood, leaving Jacob to watch over London.[103]

Behind the scenes[]

Evie Frye is a fictional character introduced as one of the two protagonists of the 2015 video game Assassin's Creed: Syndicate, where she is portrayed by English actress Victoria Atkin.

According to Henry, Evie was the same height as Jacob. Given the wanted poster of Jacob on the Charing Cross Edition of Assassin's Creed: Syndicate, she would be between 5' 6" (1.68 m) and 5' 7" (1.70 m) tall, though the information on said poster may be inaccurate. In some of the concept art for Evie's costumes, her hair appears to be platinum blonde, instead of the dark brown color she ended up having in-game.

In Syndicate's downloadable expansion Jack the Ripper, Evie is still referred to as "Miss Frye", despite presumably being married to Henry by that point. A possible explanation may be that Evie simply continued to use her maiden name in marriage, as she was well-known by it.

Jeffrey Yohalem, the lead writer for Syndicate, has stated that Evie is not an ancestor of Monima Das, a modern-day descendant of Henry's parents, Arbaaz Mir and Pyara Kaur.[107] This implies that either Henry conceived a child with someone other than Evie, or that he has at least one sibling, though there are currently no mentions of one in the franchise.

Much like Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, Evie and Jacob dipped an object in their target's blood following that person's death, though where Altaïr used a feather, the twins used a handkerchief. Like Ezio Auditore, Evie wears a half-cape, though hers is worn on the right shoulder while Ezio's was worn on the left shoulder.

Etymology[]

Evie's name is of biblical origin, being an alternate form of Eve, which means life. The word Eve also refers to Adam and Eve, thought to be the first two humans made by God in Abrahamic religions. Frye is a derivative of the English word free.
