Erik Loyalskull (died 870s) was a Norse drengr who served under Ragnar Lothbrok alongside five trusted lieutenants during the Viking raids in England.
Biography[]
Named by Ragnar himself, Erik Loyalskull knew Ragnar when they were both young. One time, they hunted a bear and Erik saw Ragnar kill it with only a knife. They celebrated the kill together, as if both had killed the bear, and Erik became aware that he would live and die for his friend. He joined Ragnar in raiding England.[1]
After the death of his friend and leader, Erik was left wandering Norway without a cause or goal.[2] He would make his home in Hildesvini's Crag, where he witnessed Ragnar kill that bear when they were young. Eventually, he encountered the shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan, and issued her a challenge for a battle to the death which she readily accepted. After a long fight, Eivor managed to defeat him, ending his life and sending him to meet with Ragnar in Valhalla.[1]
