Through his advisor Torgny the Lawspeaker, Eric was allied with the viking proto-Assassin Brotherhood. In 975, his brother and co-ruler Olof died, and his rule was contested by his nephew, Styrbjörn the Strong, who made an alliance with the Danish king Harald Bluetooth to defeat him.
