Equal Justice was a virtual representation of one of Arno Dorian's genetic memories, relived by a Helix initiate in 2014 through the Helix Navigator.

Clues[]

Courtyard[]

  • The body of the victim – The victim was enrolled in the French Revolutionary Army. She was beaten to death with a heavy object. Her face is unrecognizable.
  • An enrollment leaflet – An enrollment leaflet for the French Revolutionary Army signed by the local officer: Monsieur François Guelhaut.

The lyrics of a song

Libres et égales, sans tête, sans tête! (Free and equal, headless, headless!)
Libres et égales, sans tête et sans armée! (Free and equal, headless and without an army!)
  • Statement of the sad soldier – Sad soldier: Enrolled in the army at the same time as the victim. One of her close friends. Saw a man in an army jacket fleeing.

Destroyed House[]

  • The body of the second victim – The second victim is also a soldier. She has been smashed with a heavy weapon. The violence of the attack seems to be even worse than for the first victim.
  • The murder weapon – The rod of a Tambour Major, a musician in the French Revolutionary Army. It has been broken in half while beating the victim.

Market[]

  • A pamphlet on women – This page is written by a beginner in cursive script, almost illegibly. It tells about women, slandering their "supposed rights", and accuses them of every defeat to the Revolutionary Army.

Declaration of the Rights of Women

The page is annotated hastily: "PUTAIN. Must find this De Gouges."

---

Woman, wake up; the toxin of reason must be heard throughout the whole universe; discover your rights. The powerful empire of nature is no longer surrounded by prejudice, fanaticism, superstition, and lies. The flame of truth has dispersed all the clouds of folly and usurpation. Enslaved man has multiplied his strength and needs recourse to you to break his chains. Having become free, he has become unjust to his companion. Oh, women, women! When will you cease to be blind? What advantage have you received from the Revolution?
  • Statement of the young musician – Young musician: Did not witness the murder, was in the tavern all night. Claims he wants to join the military.

Tavern[]

  • The lyrics of a song – The lyrics of another song, on a small piece of paper. The words are almost all crossed out, making it too difficult to read.
  • Statement of the old officer – Old officer: Did not witness the murder, was listening to a performer in the tavern.

Dialogue[]

Courtyard[]

  • Arno: You knew the victim?
  • The sad soldier (A young man in a French Revolutionary Army uniform. He found the victim): She was a friend, we were on our way to join the Revolutionary Army and I found her...
  • Arno: Were you alone?
  • The sad soldier: Just as I arrived someone ran. I'm sure he wore a soldier's uniform.

Market[]

  • Arno: Were you in town last night?
  • The young musician (A very young musician, earning a wage by performing in the streets): Why?
  • Arno: A soldier has been found dead there. You look like the killer.
  • The young musician: Not me, I was at the bar the whole time! And why would I kill a soldier? I want to join the army! Who would hit a woman anyway? There's no fun in hitting a woman!

Tavern[]

  • Arno: Were you downtown last night?
  • The old officer (An old-fashioned officer of the French army. He is enjoying the warm glow of the tavern): I surely was not. I was attending a lovely performance the whole night.

Arno returned to the market and accused the young musician.

  • The young musician: This is a man's world. These Revolutionary libertines must be stopped. I was certain you saw things my way. But you are worse than a woman.

The young musician attacked Arno, who killed him in self-defense.

Conclusion[]
