Edward was a copyist monk from Readingum Abbey in England, where he served alongside his brother Ecbert before his capture at the hands of Viking warrior Eivor Varinsdottir. Later trained as a Hidden One hopeful, Edward eventually betrayed the brotherhood and joined King Alfred's burgeoning Templar Order following his mentor Adelaïde's killing of Ecbert.
Biography[]
Capture by Eivor[]
In the late 9th century, Edward's village was raided by Vikings. The guards shut the gate and prepared for battle, though Eivor Varinsdottir and an ally had already managed to infiltrate the church. Eivor went into the copyists' chamber and gave Edward the choice between going with her or losing his hands. He chose the former and Eivor dragged him out of the church before setting fire to it.[1]
Edward asked if they were going to take the treasure, to which Eivor responded that they had surveilled the monastery for weeks and deemed Edward was the true treasure due to being the region's best copyist. Fights broke out between the guards and the attacking Vikings who also attacked from a longship, but the pair of infiltrators escorted Edward to the wall overlooking the river.[1]
Edward questioned Eivor about what they would do to him if the ransom was not paid, to which she responded in jest that he could hazard a guess considering how much the monks wrote on Vikings. When the longship passed in the river beneath them, the trio jumped into it.[1]
At Ravensthorpe[]
Shortly after arriving at Ravensthorpe, the Hidden One Hytham took Edward under his wing and put him to work in his bureau. While there, Edward recognized a hermetic language of occult appearance was the same kind as found in his late brother Ecbert's own parchments.[2]
Seeking to understand the reasons behind his brother's apparent suicide, Edward sought help from Hytham and proposed the acolyte send him to Lunden accompanied by the young Viking warrior Niels Gunnarsson. In the city, they investigated a cult with troubling practices and eventually followed the clues to Scotland.[2]
