Eddie Gorm (died 28 October 1943) was a member of the British Brotherhood of Assassins who operated in Europe during World War II. He was the father of Julia Gorm and the grandfather of Maxime Gorm.

After being left to die by Boris Pash following the suicide of Julia Dusk in Poland, Eddie survived his injuries and tracked down his former mentor. Rendered mad by the loss of Dusk and convinced that the Assassins were a curse upon the world, Gorm infiltrated the USS Eldridge to kill Nikola Tesla in order to put an end to Pash's experiments with the Apple of Eden before shooting himself in the head.

Biography

Early life

Eddie was born into a family which was descended from a long line of Assassins, a fact of which he was unaware. Eventually, Eddie and his brother, Marc, joined the Royal Navy. During World War I, he participated in the Zeebrugge Raid in Belgium, for which he was awarded the highly prestigious Victoria Cross.

In 1931, while in service at a naval base in Invergordon, Scotland, Eddie was placed in charge of putting an end to a mutiny on the ship HMS Hood led by his brother Marc, who was the commander of the ship. Eddie was ordered to execute his brother, which he refused. As a consequence, Marc was sent to the Russian front and ended his life in a gulag, leaving a wife, Maria, and two children, Justine and Paul. Eddie took charge of his brother's family but left the Navy, not finding his place there anymore.

Becoming a spy

In the years that followed, Eddie started a docking business with his friend, Stan, called Gorm & Co. In addition to the trade, they did not hesitate to obtain military rations illegally and sell them profitably on the black market.

On September 7, 1940, at the East End docks, Eddie took part in a fight that ended in a general melee. The fault of Spencer, a rival who wanted to take control of their business. After Eddie and Stan returned to their warehouse a few hours later, Eddie stated that he was not afraid of the German bombardments, unlike Stan, who would have liked to leave the quays for some time for their safety. Later on, Stan appealed to a certain Jack Turpin and his right-hand man, Robert Burton, notorious bandits who wanted to hire the dockers and their band for a break in town. Eddie said they would think about it and after they left, he told Stan that they would never work for them, as they were dangerous gangsters.

Afterwards, Eddie was approached by two American officers, Colonel Boris Pash and Lieutenant Julia Dusk, who offered him a mission to infiltrate the atomic program of Nazi Germany. However, Eddie was reluctant to help them. As they were arguing, an armada of German planes attacked London and a bomb hit Eddie's house, killing his widowed sister-in-law and her two children. Distraught, Eddie drowned his sorrows in alcohol until Pash and Dusk found him one week later and convinced him to accept their offer.

Upon being informed that "Jack Turpin" was actually an SS officer and spy named Otto Hammerstein, Eddie approached him and pretended to defect to the Germans. Some days later, Eddie, Stan and Hammerstein's men raided the hotel room of French scientists who had refugeed in London, stealing their research on the heavy-water reactor. Hammerstein told the dockers to wait for him outside the hotel and offered the scientists a choice: To die in the hotel room or accept to be smuggled to Germany. Curious about Hammerstein's motives, Stan disobeyed and discovered that Hammerstein was a Nazi spy. Having followed Stan back to the room, Eddie was forced to kill him in order to prove his loyalty to Hammerstein.

Infiltrating the SS

Over the course of two years, Eddie incorporated himself into the SS, proving his value by capturing American and British agents, his targets' identities being provided to him by Pash. During this time, Julia Dusk became his contact in Berlin, strengthening Eddie's resolve at the times when he doubted his mission, having increasing difficulties to hide his contempt for the Germans and to cope with the lives he sacrified for the mission. By 1942, Eddie had become a trusted defector and officer in the SS, an "Untersturmfurher". That year, while on guard duty at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute, Eddie and Hammerstein talked to SS officer Josef Mengele, who revealed that the research on his superhuman project, übermensch, was progressing very fast thanks to the help of General Gero Kramer. Shortly after, Eddie was summoned by General Kramer, whom he was to meet in person for the first time. Kramer accused Eddie of being a spy, remarking that his service record cast doubt on his defection. However, Eddie simply explained that he had always served his country but that in return it had unjustly taken everything from him, seemingly convincing Kramer.

A few days later, before an audience of SS agents, Eddie listened as Kramer made an eloquent speech about the power of the Reich and Dr. Werner Heisenberg, the leader of the Uranprojekt. Losing his temper, Eddie stabbed Hammerstein and succeeded in taking Heisenberg hostage, threatening to kill him with his Luger if they did not let them leave the room. After Kramer ordered his men to hold back and Eddie was able to isolate himself with his hostage, he questioned Heisenberg on the uranprojekt. Heisenberg confessed that it was only a front for the real project that was kept hidden in Norway, in Vemork, a hydroelectric plant, a project which involved the construction of a device called "Die Glocke".

While Eddie had a moment of inattention, Heisenberg took the opportunity to break a glass laboratory utensil on his head. Afterwards, soldiers burst into the room and Eddie was forced to flee. Fortunately, Julia jumped into the room through a window and saved Eddie from the soldiers, although she ended up getting hit by a bullet while the two were fleeing the building. Meeting with Pash outside, the three of them entered a getaway vehicle and escaped. While on the way to a hideout in the city, Eddie recognized the vehicle's driver, Robert Burton, Hammerstein's henchman, and tried to strangle him. However, Eddie stopped when Pash revealed that Burton was one of his agents. After arriving at the hideout, Burton treated the injury of an unconscious Julia while Pash revealed to Eddie that they were Assassins and that Eddie himself was descended from a long line of Assassins. Upon learning this, Eddie decided to become an Assassin and join the Brotherhood.

Die Glocke

In the months that followed, Eddie was initiated into the Brotherhood and trained by Pash, becoming a full-fledged Assassin. On 27 February 1943, Eddie was parachuted into Vemork, eliminated the SS guards and infiltrated the building. When he entered the heart of the factory, Kramer, whom Eddie now knew to be a Templar, was waiting for him, seated in the machine and armed with a machete. As the two engaged in hand-to-hand combat, Eddie initially seemed to win by cutting into Kramer with his blades, eventually trying to kill him with his own machete. However, Kramer revealed an incredible strength and ultimately overpowered Eddie by grabbing him by the throat and lifting him off the ground until he lost consciousness.

As he regained consciousness, Eddie was tied by Kramer to the machine chair, which had been designed by Nikola Tesla. Kramer explained that the machine, coupled with electric Tesla coils, a heavy water reactor designed by the French scientists whom Eddie helped abduct in London in 1940 and an Apple of Eden, allowed its user to create a "wormhole", to watch the past of the connected individual and his ancestor. Kramer then explained what the Pieces of Eden were to Eddie, and how a single Apple had already gifted the Templars with incredible knowledge of genetics, revealing that Mengele had access to the Apple and had successfully applied his übermensch project on Kramer, which Kramer demonstrated by showing that his wounds from their fight had already closed. Kramer then revealed his goal of using Eddie's genetic memory, which contained an important line of Assassins, to locate other Pieces of Eden. As Tesla started the machine, Eddie screamed in pain.

However, something went wrong and Die Glocke exploded before Kramer could see anything. As Kramer was threatening Tesla who told him that the damaged device couldn't be restarted before several hours, soldiers informed the general that British commandos were attacking the facility. Realizing that Eddie was just a diversion for the real attack, Kramer ordered two of his men to take the groggy Assassin and Tesla into the basement while he was leading the counter-attack. As they were escorted downstair, Julia Dusk leaped from above on one of the guards, killing him with her hidden blade and allowing Eddie to strangle the other. Holding a knife to his throat, Julia demanded to know who was the old man, and Eddie introduced the famous Tesla to his partner. To the incredulous woman, the scientist revealed that his death was faked by the Nazi, and that as an old ally of the Brotherhood he accepted to work for Kramer only to hinder his progresses, as he had done a few moments earlier by sabotaging Die Glocke. He then told the Assassins that Kramer was looking for Pieces of Eden in order to create incredible weapons for the Templars, weapons which were currently developped in the basements of the Książ Castle, in Poland, by a company called Abstergo Industries.

Julia then knocked out Tesla, explaining to Eddie that the old man would slow them down in their flight and that the genius was clever enough to understand it and play along. Indeed, as Kramer was listening to the report of his men about the attack, which destoyed all of the Heavy Water of the Nazi, an injured Tesla appeared, telling the Templar that despite his best efforts Gorm escaped. The Germans immediately chased after Eddie and Julia in the surrounding mountains, but the two Assassins managed to escape under a hail of bullets by jumping from a cliff.

Riese Project

On July 15, in Poland, Eddie, Julia and a full team of Assassins led by Pash were near the Książ Castle, planning their assault on the Nazi base in order to stop Gero Kramer's plans and recover the Apple of Eden. Eddie asked why they didn't acted sooner on Tesla's intel and Julia explained that until now Kramer was continuously on the move in an armored train. Pash then informed Eddie that the Templar was in the castle to participate in an auction sale, before sending the British and his partner after the Apple while the rest of the Assassins would storm the fortified basement of the castle, to take over Kramer's train and put an end to the Riese Project.

As the two Assassins moved in the forest towards the castle, Eddie voiced his discontent with the Assassins ruthlessness and Pash's leadership, stating that he was tired of cutting throats on command for a man he didn't trusted. To Julia who accused him of being a drunk and only the shadow of an Assassin since Vemork, Eddie stated that he only stayed with the Assassins for her. Julia told him to trust Pash and to accomplish his mission before promising that they would talk about their relationship once the War would be over.

After the nightfall, the two Assassins infiltrated the castle's gardens, eliminating several guards, before climbing the walls of the castle and entering it through an open window. Once inside, the Assassins spotted Kramer as he was selling looted art to rich aristocrats, to officialy finance the war effort. Throwing a smoke grenade, they used the panic movement of the crowd to swiftly kill the soldiers in the room before attacking the Templar. Thanks to his genetic alterations, Kramer fiercely resisted the assault of the two Assassins, being on the verge of finishing Julia when Eddie pierced his chest with a blade from behind. As Eddie stated that he was a monster and that it was over for him, Kramer sneered while falling to the ground, telling Eddie that he was naive and that Pash would continue his experiments with the Apple because the Americans too wanted the Atomic Bomb. Julia then recovered the Apple from the Templar's body and they fled as the guards were closing in, with Eddie launching a grenade to cover their retreat into the tunnels leading under the castle.

They eventually reached the subterranean train station, where protected from the soldiers by reinforced doors, the rest of the Assassins were waiting for them after having eradicated all resistance. Following Pash, the duo went through rooms filled with blueprints featuring advanced weapons until they reached Kramer's armored train which the Assassins were filling with the scientists they had freed from the Nazis. Among the scientists the Assassins were getting onboard the train, Eddie spotted Tesla whom he playfully greeted. Bitter despite his liberation, Tesla then told Eddie that Pash would force him to work again on the Rainbow Project, warning Pash that he would cause the destruction of the World if he kept playing God. Realizing that Kramer was right about Pash, Eddie and Julia confronted their leader about the old man's revelation, but Pash brushed it off, telling them that they had to leave and ordered Julia to give him the Apple of Eden. While being carried away by other Assassins, Tesla prompted Julia not to give the Apple to Pash because he was in fact working with the Templars.

As an unsettled Dusk asked him if it was true, Pash explained that the Templars had finally realized that the War was escaping their control and that he had accepted a temporary alliance to help them solve the problem and save humanity from destruction. He then added that thanks to the Apple an Tesla, Project Rainbow was their last hope to end the war before it was too late. When Eddie moved between him and Julia, Pash pulled out his weapon, a double hook, with which he grievously wounded Gorm when the latter threw himself at him at the sight of the weapon. While Eddie was bleeding on the ground with Pash standing above him and telling him that it was a a waste and that he should have trusted him, Dusk armed a hand grenade while holding the Apple. Crying, she told Pash that Kramer was right, the Templars and the Assassins were all the same, and that neither she nor the Apple would ever again be involved in all the killings caused by the two Orders, before setting off the weapon.

While killing herself, Julia ultimately failed to destroy the artifact with the grenade and Pash picked up the intact Apple on the ground. Pash mourned Julia's loss with Gorm accusing him of being responsible for her death and many others. An Assassin asked him what to do with Eddie and Pash responded that he was no longer one of them and told them to leave their former brother behind to drown in his own blood while they departed with the train. However, despite his injuries, Eddie managed to crawl through a ventilation duct out of the bunker, into the forest surrounding the castle.

Rainbow Project

On October 28, onboard the USS Eldridge in Philadelphia's shipyard, Pash and his Templar ally, John von Neumann, were about to launch their own Die Glocke device and were waiting for Tesla to join them. Pash left the control room to fetch for Tesla with Von Neumann reminding him that it was their last attempt to make it work before the Inner Sanctum forced him to join the Manhattan Project. Reaching Tesla's cabin, Pash discovered the bodies of two of his Assassins and rushed inside only to find Eddie waiting for him with a smoking gun in his hand.

Seeing the body of Tesla, a shocked Pash told his former protégé that he could have seen Julia again if he had spared the scientist. Eddie immediately fired a bullet into Pash's arm, forbidding him to pronounce Julia's name ever again as she was dead because of him. Confused and erratic following Julia's death, Eddie also accused Pash of being responsible for the death of his family in the London bombings and for turning him into a murderer. But at last he had redeemed himself by eliminating Tesla, which deprived Pash of the Atomic bomb and prevented the endless cycle of destruction that would follow its creation. Pash told him that Project Rainbow was never intended to create a bomb, but to use the Apple of Eden, as well as Von Neumann's and Tesla's work, to travel back in time to stop the war before it started.

Eddie committing suicide

Pash then explained to a dumfounded Eddie that back in 1933, the Templars gave an Apple of Eden to Adolf Hitler to help him take over Europe, so they could then save it through the Americans and completely establish their economic and political domination over the old continent. But the control of the War later completely escaped the Templars, Hitler, Stalin and Roosevelt having their own ambitions for the world, so the Order decided to provide the Atomic Bomb to the Americans. Von Neumann disagreed with the Inner Sanctum, believing he could create a time machine to solve their problem peacefully and contacted Pash and the Brotherhood for help. Eddie retorted that it was all lies because time travel was impossible but Pash told him that Von Neumann had found a solution by studying the Apple, serious enough to convince Tesla that there was a small chance it could work.

As Eddie was musing about being reunited with Julia, Pash suddenly stabbed him in the side but Eddie managed to push the older Assassin away by hitting him on the head with his gun. Then, Eddie recited the Creed, insisting on "Stay your blade from the flesh of an innocent", and told Pash that the Assassins were the demon plaguing humanity and that there was no need of time travel to protect the innocents. Telling him that there was truly only one way to do so, Eddie wished Pash good luck with his project before shooting himself in the head.

Legacy

Gorm somehow fathered a daughter, Julia Gorm, an Assassin who by 1963 was serving in the Bloodstone Unit under Boris Pash during the Vietnam War.

In 2016, Eddie's grandson, Maxime Gorm, relived his memories in an effort from the Adlers to locate the Apple of Eden held by Kramer during World War II.

Equipment and skills

Gorm was an able alpinist, as he managed to scale frozen cliffs with little difficulty.

In addition to the traditional dual hidden blades, Gorm carried a handgun and a Thompson submachine gun as his main weapons. He also kept three grenades on his back.

Trivia

• Despite Gorm committing suicide, shooting himself in the head, his 21st century descendant, Maxime, was still able to witness his memories to the point of Eddie's death. It's not known if Eddie Gorm's daughter was somehow conceived after his death, if Maxime was reliving Eddie's memories through a DNA sample taken directly from the British body or if it's a continuity error.
