In 1536, Diego was one of the men who captured Gonzalez Pardo and Quila as they were trying to warn the Incas of a plot to kill Emperor Manco Inca Yupanqui. Later, as Diego was guarding the captives in a grove near a battle site, Pardo managed to antagonise Diego de Cuervo until a fight ensued, attracting nearby Inca warriors to their location and using the diversion to escape. The two captives reached the nearby Cuzco, climbing one of its unguarded wall but were followed by an enraged Diego, who tried to jump on Quila. However the young Inca managed to push him away, and Diego de Cuervo fall from the wall, apparently to his death.
