Dias (died 824) was a former Roman soldier-turned pirate hired by Hidden Ones' Master Assassin Fuladh Al Haami.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Previously stationed at the island of Crete, Dias failed at his watch and then turned to a life at sea as a pirate. However, his tenure as a pirate was put in jeopardy when Fuladh blackmailed him to join his group of mercenaries. Compelled, Dias was told to meet in Fustat at a tavern with his fellow group members.[1]

Working for Fuladh[]

In 824, upon his arrival at the tavern,[2] Fuladh explained their mission to track the Martyrs of Agaunum and acquire the case they guarded. After the meeting, Dias instantly seduced Mared, a Welsh mercenary, while selecting their weapons from a table setup by Fuladh. After gathering their supplies, the group traveled to their destination, with Dias leading the way. With the number of horses being low, he rode alongside Mared. After they settled to rest, he and the others heard Roshan, a young thief and fellow member, while she described a plan to attack the Martyrs.[1]

From hearing the plan, Dias tried to befriend Wei, a Chinese bomb-maker, but Wei refused and continued to ride with Roshan. When they set up to ambush the Martyrs, Dias joined the group, but was reluctant to fight with the others, while Persian mercenary Azadeh guarded Wei, who was in charge to drop the bomb. However, the plan went off too early[1] and this led to an intensive fight with the Martyrs and their guards. Aided by Mared, Dias fought well enough to survive, until he was disarmed. Dias called for Mared, who came and covered him. In the moment, Dias kissed Mared, who was distracted and then killed while Dias used her as a human shield from incoming arrows. After their attempt failed, Dias was called out by Samoan warrior Nafanua for killing Mared, which caused a fraction within the group, with Dias only backed up by twin Norse brothers Geir and Gud.[3]

However, after Azadeh calmed down tensions, they all regrouped and decided to outrun the Martyrs by going over the mountain pass and crossing the Red Sea to Karachi.[3] Climbing up the mountain, Dias found himself grouped with Nafanua and Francis, a self-proclaimed Christian prophet. However, while descending the mountain, he saw Wei fall to his death. Despite feeling bad, he saw the harbor and rushed his group to the dock, except Roshan, who left with Azadeh to find Wei's body. Ultimately, they all found their way aboard a dhow, stole it, and sailed for Karachi.[4]

While initially taking ahold of the dhow, Dias saw how both Roshan and Nafanua were nearly pushed overboard, but knew to keep a distance from the women. However, while resting, Roshan took ahold of the dhow and steered in the right direction. Upon arriving in Karachi, he found an inn for them to rest and recuperate.[5] Waiting for the new maps, he saw Roshan, Azadeh, and Azadeh's wolf Onyx arrive while he questioned where the twins were. When Roshan responded to not know, he stated that they leave, with or without their twin members. After readying themselves with new horses and supplies, they followed Onyx, who tracked the Martyrs' scent.[6]

While riding and following Onyx, they stopped when the wolf sensed a disturbance. At their stop, Nafanua fell over simultaneously when arrows were loosed upon the group. Fortunately, when Onyx took down two of the attackers, Dias, Roshan, and Azadeh fought and killed the rest. Realizing they were sent by the Martyrs, Dias accused and held Francis by his sword while Roshan saw that Nafanua was dead, but by poison. When Roshan also accused Francis and interrogated him on his background, the Christian prophet dropped his act and proclaimed his allegiance with the Martyrs. Before he could act, Dias was hit by Francis, who fled from them. Wanting to kill him, Dias was stopped by Roshan, who said Francis will lead them to the Martyrs. When Onyx started to trace Francis' scent, they all follow the wolf and saw their destination to be Baghdad.[6]

Death[]

Entering Baghdad, Dias caught sight of Francis, who was entering the House of Wisdom. With the house guarded, the remaining three mercenaries sneaked inside and saw a private function between the Martyrs and their customer, with Francis in attendance. Positioning themselves, after Azadeh signaled Onyx to attack and kill Francis, Dias jumped and decapitated one of the Martyrs, with Roshan following up with another kill. While Roshan and Azadeh fought off two Martyrs, Dias fought off against his own Martyr. Fortunately, he bested his opponent while the other Martyrs were killed by Roshan, Azadeh, and their recently arrived employer. While the hooded stranger then fought against the customer, Dias saw the case and went to obtain what was inside. However, Dias activated the hidden mechanism and the case exploded, killing Dias instantly.[7]

Skills and equipment[]

Dias was skilled in sea navigation[5] and sword combat.[1]
