Unwavering Rebel

Born in the Oyo Kingdom of Western Africa sometime in the late 17th century, Irekanni had a troubled childhood. Over-strict parents forced a rebellious streak to develop in her from a young age and she frequently got into trouble. Things came to a head when her father forced her into an unwanted marriage with an abusive husband. She killed the man and, although it was in self defense, was jailed for the crime and sold to be shipped overseas.

Irekanni ended up at a sugar cane plantation in Haiti, where conditions were atrocious and the taskmasters were brutal. She kept quiet for a time, almost broken by the betrayal of her family and people, but she had always coveted freedom above all things. Within a year of her arrival, Irekanni secretly organized an uprising of the plantation's field workers. They killed their overseers and the plantation owner, and then sailed for the freedom of the open sea.

It was in Nassau that Irekanni met Mary Read, who sensed a kindred spirit in the towering tribeswoman. She introduced Irekanni to the Creed and easily convinced her to join in their fight against the oppressive Templars. After the fall of Nassau, she continued to operate in the Caribbean and Atlantic, disrupting the slave trade and damaging Templar control of the region.
