Daimyō (大名) were Japanese feudal lords who ruled most of Japan from their land holdings from the 10th century until the Meiji Restoration creation of the prefecture system in 1871. Backgrounds of daimyo ranged from families related to the Imperial family to promoted samurai. Though they were subordinated to the emperor and the shōgun,[1] there were periods, such as the late Sengoku period, which saw both of these powers weakened compared to those of the many daimyō.[2]
Notable daimyō include Date Masamune,[3] Mōri Motonari,[4] and Oda Nobunaga.[5]
