Theban guards confronting Nefertiti's apparition
The Curse of the Pharaohs was a protracted incident in and around Thebes, Egypt circa 34 BCE. The result of manipulations of an ancient relic in the care of Isidora, the God's Wife of Amun at the Temple of Karnak, it saw the disembodied spirits of several past pharaohs—Akhenaten, Nefertiti, and Tutankhamun from the Thutmosid dynasty, as well as Ramesses II—seemingly returned to life to exact vengeance upon the grave robbers and desecrators who had plagued the region for generations. The Egyptian Hidden Ones' Mentor Bayek investigated the rumors of reanimated corpses, retrieved the relic, and assassinated Isidora, then hid the relic to prevent its misuse in the future.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
The name is a reference to the real-world curse of the pharaohs, an alleged curse placed upon those who disturbed the mummies of ancient Egyptian pharaohs and denizens. Perhaps the most well known curse was that associated with the opening of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922; in the ten years that followed its opening, 11 of the people involved in the excavation died.[2]
