The Coyote Man was a notorious Templar—most likely of Lakota ancestry—who was regarded as the deadliest hunter of Assassins active on the east coast of North America during the 18th century. At one point, he slaughtered an Assassin Mentor with his bare hands.[1]
In 2012, his genetic memories were utilized as an Animi Avatar by Abstergo Entertainment, a subsidiary of the Templar company Abstergo Industries, for the tertiary stage of their Animus game console. The title of his character was that of his very alias in life: "Coyote Man".[2] As part of their plan to influence the general public with propaganda, Abstergo's profile for the Coyote Man omitted his Templar affiliations, describing him as a man loyal to his village rather than the Templars. While it also replaced the victim of Coyote Man's infamous murder of a Mentor with a bear, it did not shy away from noting he was an Assassin hunter.[1]
Personality and traits
A sheer psychopath who gleefully reveled in bloodshed but scorned social interaction, the Coyote Man was widely feared by his enemies yet respected by his Templar allies. In combat, he was wild and frenetic, attacking with his twin shanks in frenzied strikes. Animalistic, he would hound after his prey with a gleeful, unsettling grin, and all this contributed to his terrifying reputation as a savage predator. His countenance, made more fearsome by his preference for warpaint and bone masks, was more than just a visage, for they were reflections of his deadliness as a warrior and a hunter.[1]
True to his feral behavior, his combat style was chaotic and unpredictable, relying on his hyperactive agility to rush in and out of his enemies' vision, for which Erudito joked that he won "the deadliest Templar Guerilla Award five times in a row!" Capable of killing an Assassin Mentor with his bare hands, his prowess was such that Abstergo heralded him as the best Assassin hunter of his time on the American east coast,[1] even though it was Shay Cormac who exterminated the Colonial Brotherhood of Assassins.[3]
Trivia
- Although the Coyote Man's ethnicity is not given, his attire and the fact his multiplayer avatar's Champion Pack is named the "Iktomi Follower" suggests that he hails from the Lakota since Iktomi is a culture hero for the Lakota. Moreover, coyotes are associated with the plains and the Lakota people.
- Erudito's hacked version of the Coyote Man's file in the Abstergo Story of Assassin's Creed III multiplayer states that he killed a Mentor with his bare hands. As the Coyote Man is also described as operating on the east coast of North America, i.e. the British colonies, one might assume that the Mentor he killed was of the Colonial Brotherhood. However, because the only two Mentors of the Colonial Brotherhood in the 18th century wre the founder Achilles Davenport, who died of old age, and the protagonist Ratonhnhaké:ton, the Mentor that the Coyote Man slew could have been of the Colonial Brotherhood.
