Charles VII (1403 – 1461) was King of France from 1422 to 1461 during the Hundred Years' War although his coronation wasn't until 1429.
Due to his mother, Queen Isabeau of Bavaria, being rumored to have lovers, his legitimacy to the throne became questioned, especially by the English and Burgundians. As the fourth in line to the throne, he never expected to become king and became insecure about it.
Biography[]
Born on 22 February 1403,[1] Charles VII was the fourth son of Charles VI and his wife Isabeau of Bavaria although rumors persisted that Charles was the result of of an affair between his mother and father's brother. Growing up in the shadows of his older three brothers, Charles never expected to be king, but when all three of his elder brother predeceased their father, that left Charles as the heir apparent. Thus, he became insecure about becoming King.[2]
On 6 March 1429, Charles met Jeanne d'Arc and permitted a private audience with her. Jeanne proclaimed him the true heir to the throne. While giving her speech, her radiance flared and an image of an "angel" appeared, placing a crown before Charles.[3]
