"Sending signals through air, Made of wood and rope, Chappe's friends took note. "
―Nostradamus riddle on the Chappe signal towers.[src]-[m]
ACUDB - Chappe Signal Towers

The Chappe signal towers were a system of semaphore relay stations for long distance communication.

Invented by Claude Chappe in 1792, the relay line consisted of towers spaced between 12 and 25 kilometers apart, each fitted with a telescope. The wooden arms of the towers would form codes which got transmitted along the system, making it possible to quickly transmit crucial information.[1]

When Austrian forces under the Duke of Brunswick marched on Paris, royalists planned to signal the vulnerability of the city defenses to them through the signal towers. Thomas-Alexandre Dumas had Parisian Assassin Arno Dorian sabotage four of the towers to cut off the royalists' communication with the Duke.[2] Arno had another encounter with the Chappe towers when solving a riddle from Nostradamus.[3]

Thanks to the signal towers, on September 1, 1794, Parisians were informed of the capture of Conde-sur-L'Escaut from the Austrians, 220 kilometers away in less than an hour.[1]
