The Castle of Saint-Pée (French: Château de Saint-Pée) is a castle in the commune of Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle in southwestern France.

History[]

In 1609, the castle belonged to Baron d'Amou, a man who sought to be in judge Pierre de Lancre's good graces, and, as such, offered him the castle to be used as his headquarters during the Labourd witch-hunt.[1]

Following a successful Templar attack against the Assassins and their recovery of the Shroud of Eden, Pierre de Lancre had François Ascair sent to the Castle of Saint-Pée with the Piece of Eden for safekeeping along with Templar reinforcements from Bordeaux and Toulouse.[1]

Afterwards, during a procession for an execution at Saint-Jean-de-Luz, a riot erupted, led by a group of sailors recently arrived from Newfoundland. This effort by the Assassins to allow the people of France to fight the inquisition effectively cut off Pierre de Lancre and fellow Templar La Morguy from reaching the Castle of Saint-Pée.[2]

Meanwhile, a group of ten Assassins led by Fabrizzio Auditore and including Margaux, planned a full-scale infiltration of the castle, wanting to take those remaining at the fortress by surprise and preventing from calling on reinforcements while recovering the Shroud of Eden. Playing to their strength in stealth, the group managed to take care of a great number of sentries, essentially halving the numbers of enemies at the location, though eventually the alarm was raised.[3]

François Ascair was stationed outside Ermeline's bedroom at the castle, along with other four soldiers, surprising Margaux and Fabrizzio as the pair tracked down the Shroud. François and Fabrizzio taunted each other before two other Assassins emerged and killed two of the five enemies in the room. Ascair rushed Auditore and Margaux slipped into the bedroom,[3] where she fought Ermeline for the Shroud, emerging victorious. To slow down the reinforcements called by Ascair, the Assassins set the castle on fire before slipping away,[4] devastating a quarter of the fortress and reducing dozens of important documents to ashes.[5]
